BC: Update – CPA advocating exclusion of propane cylinders in govt’s expanded recycling program

Print this Article

The CPA continues to meet with the British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy to advocate for the exclusion of cylinders up to 100 lbs in its expanded recycling program. Currently, product categories that will be added to the Recycling Regulation in 2023 include ‘refillable propane canisters under 100lbs’. Extended producer responsibility programs are expected to be fully operational by 2025/2026 (see  previous story).

The CPA will be submitting a proposal for exemption based on the current propane recycling system that reaches close to a 100% recycling rate within the province. This outcome far surpasses the government’s current proposed requirements of reaching 75% recycling efficiency.

The CPA is advocating that excluding propane cylinders is the best approach to avoid excessive burden on an already functional recycling system and will continue discussing options for their exclusion with the ministry.
