In early May, the Provincial Fire, Plumbing, Gas, Building, and Electrical Administrators department of Alberta Municipal Affairs released Joint Code Interpretation 14-FCI-003: Mobile/Temporary Cooking Equipment.
The Interpretation defines the requirements for a Mobile Cooking Operation (MCO - food truck or trailer) under the Safety Codes Act. It authorises an MCO to utilize electricity, wood, charcoal, propane or natural gas as energy for cooking. It confirms the application of the Alberta Fire Code Article 2.6.19 – regarding the design, install and operation of NFPA 96 commercial cooking ventilation and exhaust systems.
The Interpretation incorporates Gas Code Regulations: B149.1-15 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code; B149.2-15 Propane Storage and Handling Code; and B149.5-15 Installation Code for Propane Fuel Systems and Tanks on Highway Vehicles. The scope of these Codes effectively covers all installations of appliances, equipment, components, and accessories where natural gas or propane is used for cooking purposes.
The appendix of the Code Interpretation has useful food truck safety facts and tips that is printable for any member who has clients working a mobile cooking operation.
