ON: Ontario Electrical Safety Code – Electrical equipment near combustible gas equipment

The TSSA recently circulated Bulletin 2-10-12 Electrical Equipment near Combustible Gas Equipment to Propane Advisory Council Members. The bulletin provides clarification to questions about Rule 2-324 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code which states that the clearance between arc-producing electrical equipment and a combustible gas relief device or vent shall be in accordance with the requirements of CSA B149.1, “Natural gas and propane installation code,” which uses the terms “source of ignition” and “discharge openings of relief devices.”

From the CPA’s perspective, when propane installations are in place before the installation of a source of ignition (smart meter and heat pumps), the utility must meet regulatory requirements or pay all costs associated with the introduction of the source of ignition.

The CPA has requested a legal opinion relative to the installation of a source of ignition beside an existing propane installation in Canada. The legal opinion will help the association assess its position and next steps.
