The CPA considers the proposed amendment to exempt individuals who refuel propane powered vehicles at cardlock/keylock facilities and private outlets from the requirement to hold a propane plant operator certificate or record of training (ROT) an important first step.

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has released the drafts of the updated safety standards CSA B620, CSA B621 and CSA B622 for a 60-day consultation period.

Health Canada has issued a recall on four Kingsman Fireplaces due to fire hazard. The affected fireplaces have a gap in the outer cabinet, which may cause nearby wood framing studs to overheat, posing a fire hazard. The Kingsman ZRB Series (Model Numbers ZRB46LP & ZRB46LPE) and the Kingsman VRB Series (Model Numbers VRB46LP & VRB46LPE) are affected by this recall. For more information, please visit the Health Canada website.

A recall on certain boiler models of Vitodens 200-W and Vitodens 222-F has been issued by Health Canada. The back plate of the heat exchanger may corrode and exhaust flue gases may leak into the house or living spaces, posing a risk of increased carbon monoxide levels. For more information on affected products, please visit the Health Canada website

IMPORTANT – ADJUSTMENT CHANGES TO WORKBOOKS, CERTIFICATES AND WALLET CARDS
All certificates will be updated as of April 1, 2019. This will not have any impact on the exams and course material you have in your possession. These changes will entail, for example, removing the “LPG term” from certificates issued in Ontario and some other adjustments primarily for Ontario, which imposes their own classification. All Ontario valid certificates (Record of training (ROT)) issued prior to April 1 remain valid certificates and do not require to be reissued.

Ongoing Consultation & Updates

In July 2017, the Canadian Registration Number (CRN) Industry Consortium (a group comprised of the CPA and 12 other industry members) published a white paper on the current CRN system identifying the registration process as an inter-provincial and cross-border trade barrier. The group recommended improvements to the process to facilitate the trade of pressure equipment through the mutual recognition of jurisdictions’ regulatory requirements and administrative processes related to the issuance of a CRN.

Transport Canada (TC) is currently consulting on proposed amendments to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR). TC regularly updates the Canadian regulations to harmonize them with UN, international and U.S. texts. The harmonization of the regulations allows TC to ensure consistency between the different modes of transport, facilitate international trade of dangerous goods, and reduce regulatory burden on consignors and carriers who deal with dangerous goods in Canada.
