Many of Measurement Canada’s (MC) calibration service laboratories are temporarily closed or working with significantly reduced staff. Considering this, MC will allow certain test (local) standards (e.g., weight kits) and measuring apparatus (e.g., electricity meter consoles) that cannot be calibrated, and that have passed their recertification date to continue to be used by MC accredited or registered authorized service providers for examinations and verifications. This protocol applies for specified periods of time and under certain conditions. View the Standards calibrations section on the Government of Canada website.

To support Ontario’s need to move essential freight and supplies during the current COVID-19 emergency, the Ministry of Transportation is including the commodities listed for exemption in the federal Hours of Service exemptions as issued by Transport Canada (see below) from reduced load periods across southern Ontario – this includes propane.

The New Brunswick Transportation and Infrastructure Ministry is lifting spring weight restrictions from highways in southern New Brunswick on Sunday, May 10. In northern New Brunswick, weight restrictions will remain in place until midnight on Sunday, May 17.

On Thursday, April 29, 2020, Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority hosted a webinar consultation session to provide an update on their revised business model, fee structure and implementation timeframes. Key program milestones include: Stakeholder input sought in spring 2020, notice of fee schedule changes issued in summer 2020, and new fee schedule implemented late 2020/early 2021.

The Minister of Transport announced measures to reduce train derailments through three different Ministerial Orders directed to railway companies. The three new Ministerial Orders will come into effect immediately and will remain in place until permanent rule changes are approved.

Transport Canada has indicated that it plans to delay the date for it’s regulatory work on railway data requirements. Due to COVID-19, the draft regulatory proposal will be rescheduled and while a date is difficult to provide at this time, they have targeted a fall meeting to consult with industry on the new proposal.

Technical Safety BC has issued a new directive – D-BP 2019-01: Boiler, Pressure Vessel & Refrigeration Contractor Licensing Requirements. This guidance will provide online CRN design registration, FAQ, contractor license requirements, online training and more.
