Mandatory COVID-19 screening requirements for Ontario workplaces came into effect on September 26, 2020. Employers should take immediate steps to implement the new screening procedures, as failing to do so can result in charges being laid by the Ministry of Labour under the Occupational Health & Safety Act. On June 12, 2019, Transport Canada published amendments (changes) to the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part II. Currently, motor carriers and drivers maintain a daily log, but the amended regulations stipulate that these logs be replaced with electronic logging devices that have been tested and certified by an accredited certification body. As a result of the CPA’s effort to get an extension, we are pleased to announce that Transport Canada is extending the temporary certificates for suspension of training and inspections to January 31, 2021. The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Directorate presented key findings to General Advisory Policy Council members on their analysis of repeated violations (recidivism) and as well as information on the nature of the non-compliances relating to Parts 3, 5 and 6 of the TDG Regulations. Provinces continue to adjust to the pandemic by reducing or increasing the size of groups for indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings, depending on rising case numbers. Ontario has reduced its indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings but the reduced numbers should not affect the size of training classrooms because they apply only to private social gathering numbers.
