As part of the CPA's tenth anniversary activities, we are interviewing past and present members about the association's history as well as some of the exciting future opportunities that exist for the propane industry.

In our premier video, listen to CPA Board Chair Nancy Borden reflect on the association's last ten years. We encourage you to visit the CPA's 10th anniversary web page and follow us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

On behalf of the Canadian Propane Association, the Propane Training Institute and myself, I would like to thank George Olah for his contribution and support. The “baby”, PTI, is ready to move forward and lead the way in promoting a culture of safe propane handling and use of propane-fuelled equipment, while improving the skills of workers.

On March 15, Transport Canada granted a new set of temporary exemptions to certain sections of the rules and regulations pertaining to the qualification of railway personnel under the notice of exemption X 21-04.

Health Canada has launched its new ArriveCan app to provide mandatory travel information required for entry into Canada. The government says the app is designed to help travelers submit mandatory information in advance of their arrival from another country. For more information on the app, check out the government’s presentation, ArriveCAN 101.

The Ontario government is launching a series of zero-tolerance workplace safety inspections in sectors and regions hardest hit by COVID-19, beginning April 9 with warehouses, food processors and manufacturers in Peel and Halton Regions. Officers will be checking for compliance with COVID-19 health and safety requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Reopening Ontario Act to ensure appropriate physical distancing, screening, and masking.

Transport Canada’s February presentation provided insight into its virtual inspection process, revealing that whenever possible, remote oversight is currently the preferred method to conduct inspections. While TC has flagged “high risk” locations for in-person auditing, they indicate that most facilities can expect a virtual process.

At the end of March, the CPA submitted comments on members’ behalf on the Ontario government’s proposed Hazardous and Special Products regulation that transitions the Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste Program to full producer responsibility. The submission reiterates the CPA’s business case that supports the exemption of refillable propane cylinders due to their contribution to the province’s circular economy, as aligned with the tenets of the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act.

GOOD NEWS. The AQP and the CPA have been working for several months in collaboration with Emploi-Québec, the regulatory body for training in Québec. We are proud to announce the result of this work provides access to new training curriculum and reduces administrative measures. The AQP and the CPA would like to thank Richard Charbonneau for his contribution to this success.

Following a request to modify the certificate from Transport Canada, you must replace all Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificates you issued using the CPA English version of the TGD certificate. If your company is using its own certificate, no change is required.

Provinces continue to adjust to the pandemic by reducing or increasing the size of groups for indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings, depending on rising case numbers. Check out Destination Canada's up-to-date information on regulations for safely meeting across Canada.

Please refer to the CPA's Best practices recommended during COVID-19 - Measures for Reopening your Retail Operations, produced to assist you in hosting a training session during COVID-19.
