With the rapidly changing circumstances across Canada, the CPA recently published an update on COVID-19 news, along with a reminder about the important CPA resources that are available to help keep you, your employees, and customers safe and your businesses open. The document can be viewed in the Document Centre in your online member profile (Category: Documents - all members).

A win for CPA members: Transport Canada is set to no longer require that their inspectors verify if distributors are providing a copy of the cylinder requalification document to new owners of a purchased container. The CPA had approached TC about the enforcement after members raised concerns.

Measurement Canada announced a small fee reduction recently, based on the annual change following the release of the Consumer Price Index. As of April 1, 2021, members will see an adjustment of -0.2 per cent on fees received from Measurement Canada. This means a service that typically cost $1,042.44 last year will now cost $1,040.36.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced that a spring blitz on truck inspections will be conducted May 4-6, 2021. They indicated that carriers should expect increased attention from commercial law enforcement and an uptick in the number of random inspections on commercial vehicles.

The BC government will require mandatory entry-level training for new Class 1 commercial driver’s licence applicants. It will exceed the minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard for entry-level training of Class 1 drivers.

At the April 21, 2021 meeting of the CPA’s Ontario Committee, the propane industry provided Mr. Sam Sadeghi, statutory director of fuels with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, with unanimous opposition to the regulator’s new fee structure that becomes effective May 1, 2021.

The province is planning to introduce legislation that, if passed, will offer up to three paid sick days per employee. The legislation would require employers to provide employees with up to $200 of pay for up to three days if they are missing work because of COVID-19. This program will be retroactive to April 19, 2021 and effective until September 25, 2021, the date the CRSB will expire. Click here for more information.

The province of Québec published a notice on April 15, 2021 on the mandatory reporting of certain emissions of contaminants into the atmosphere. Fuel distributors are required to submit a GHG emission report no later than June 1, 2021 if more than 200 litres of fuel were distributed between January 1 and December 31, 2020.

As circumstances change rapidly across Canada due to COVD-19, this is an important overview for trainers about the resources the CPA has available on best practices, recertification extensions, resources if you are required to travel, and gathering numbers indoors.
