On January 27, 2021, Transport Canada announced the nomination of both Adrian Michielsen, Imperial Oil’s Regional Advisor, and Robert Loenhart, CPA’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Safety, as the new chairperson and the vice-chairperson of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods General Policy Advisory Council, respectively.

Transport Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods Directorate has issued guidance to its inspectorate on conducting remote oversight activities because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January 2021, Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority notified Propane Advisory Council members of further plans to pilot test the merger of all fuels advisory councils into a single forum comprising propane, natural gas and liquid fuels representatives.

On January 29, 2021, Ontario’s Technical Standards & Safety Authority announced new web-based scheduling and inspection services for the boilers and pressure vessels and operating engineers regulated sectors. Members should be aware of changes, timelines and potential impact on TSSA services during these information technology upgrades.

Job creators in Alberta can now verify the credentials of tradespersons and apprentices through the online service, Tradesperson Credential Verification Service. The service is part of the provincial government’s commitment to reducing red tape. Employers can access the Tradesperson Credential Verification Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can be accessed here.

A reminder that Transport Canada has provided an extension on the 10-year pressure relief valve replacement schedule. The CPA approached TC for the extension in response to membership concerns on difficulties in meeting the timeline.

The TSSA notified stakeholders that the online consultation on the CAD amendments for the Propane Storage & Handling Safety Program had closed, that the CAD was now published, and will come into effect on February 8, 2021. The Propane CAD may be accessed here and the consultation summary is available here.

The intergovernmental and stakeholder working group recently met on January 20, 2021 to further discuss opportunities and challenges with integrating the testing and emissions of heavy-duty commercial diesel vehicles in Ontario.

As of February 5, 2021, PTI and some provincial governments will extend training certifications post expiry date.
