NAM The U.S. economy grew 2.9 percent at the annual rate in the third quarter, up from 1.4 percent in the second quarter and at its fastest pace in two years. Consumer spending, net exports and inventory spending were bright spots in the latest report, with fixed investment data remaining soft. Consumer spending on goods increased 2.2 percent at the annual rate in the third quarter, boosted by strength in durable goods purchases, including motor vehicles. At the same time, net exports made its largest contribution to real GDP growth since the fourth quarter of 2014, with goods exports jumping an annualized 14.5 percent.

Bloomberg Business The European Commission in Brussels is set to propose legislation on Wednesday affecting billions of euros in Chinese exports to the EU. The goal is to meet demands by China for equal treatment in trade cases and to assure EU companies such as steelmaker ArcelorMittal and solar-panel producer Solarworld AG that import tariffs are high enough to protect them from Chinese competitors.

The company behind Minnesota's first copper-nickel mine is putting its shoulder to the wheel of a project that has been over a decade in the making. On Friday Polymet Mining (TSX:POM, NYSE:PLM) announced it has applied for a permit to mine copper, nickel and precious metals at a site in northern Minnesota known as The Duluth Complex – a rich vein of minerals stretching from about 150 miles north of Duluth to the Canadian border.

Bloomberg The U.S. trade deficit shrank in September to the lowest level in more than a year on stronger exports of goods and travel services. The gap narrowed by 9.9 percent to $36.4 billion, the smallest since February 2015, Commerce Department figures showed Friday in Washington. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for a deficit of $38 billion. The value of exports was the highest since July of last year, while imports declined by the most since March.
