Institute for Supply Management press release Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in March, and the overall economy grew for the 131st consecutive month, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM® Report on Business®. The report was issued by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: "The March PMI® registered 49.1%, down 1 percentage point from the February reading of 50.1%. The New Orders Index registered 42.2%, a decrease of 7.6 percentage points from the February reading of 49.8%. The Production Index registered 47.7%, down 2.6 percentage points compared to the February reading of 50.3%. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 45.9%, a decrease of 4.4 percentage points compared to the February reading of 50.3%. The Employment Index registered 43.8%, a decrease of 3.1 percentage points from the February reading of 46.9%.

Autocar UK firm Equipmake has used 3D-printing to create a super-cool EV motor that is more power-intensive than conventional examples. The new Ampere motor-generator from British Firm Equipmake is a small and light package that makes very high power. Its low weight, low-inertia components, less mass in which unwanted heat can be stored and superior liquid cooling all contribute to a power-to-weight ratio more than four times greater than that of existing EV motor tech.

3D Print Jonathan Wright recently submitted a thesis to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The University of Sheffield, exploring 3D printing with tungsten, a rare metal. In ‘Additive Manufacturing of Tungsten via Selective Laser Melting and Electron Beam Melting,’ Wright details the potential for powder bed additive layer manufacturing (ALM) of pure tungsten, using both selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM).

Car Advice Australian eMachine-builder HyperPower has commenced production of its "QFM-360-X" — an electric motor that the company claims to be the world's first MegaWatt "extreme-duty" unit. Despite its diminutive 43-centimetre width, one single QFM-360-X can produce up to one MegaWatt. HyperPower says the QFM-360-X's design has been future-proofed to cater for other non-automotive scenarios, such as light rail and certain high speed rail applications where reliability and serviceability are critical.
