GSAE members were saddened to learn of former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell's passing on March 13. A longtime member of GSAE, Massell served as Atlanta’s 53rd mayor from 1970 to 1974. He was the city’s first and only Jewish mayor and the most recent non-Black mayor of the city. For over 30 years, Mr. Sam lead the Buckhead Coalition through both successful and turbulent times. The Classic Center Arena, opening in fall 2023, will have 5,500 permanent seats with the capacity to hold up to 8,500 for concerts, sports tournaments, conventions and banquets. The arena will be home to the UGA Ice Dawgs and a new professional hockey team. The arena is directly connected to The Classic Center and is just steps away from the excitement of Downtown Athens restaurants, shops and entertainment.

Earlier this year, the Georgia Aquarium received eight cold-stunned loggerhead sea turtles that were rescued off the coast of New England. The Aquarium’s animal care and veterinary teams have since been providing exceptional care for these animals so that they can be released back into the ocean. Kudos to the Aquarium team and our own Nadja Pitts for letting us know the good news of their recent release near Jacksonville.
