 Gov. Nathan Deal recognized several of the state’s top tourism professionals at the 2014 Georgia Governor’s Tourism Conference in Augusta. Hosted by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureau, the annual event gathered more than 500 of Georgia’s tourism industry professionals. The Larry Allen Tourism Leadership Award was presented to Barry White, President & CEO, Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau. This award recognizes an individual who demonstrates excellence in leadership skills and abilities. Given in memory of Larry Allen, who was General Manager of Stone Mountain and exemplified all around friendship, support and leadership in the tourism industry. |

Debbie Hackman-Bartlett, CAE helped contribute to the Georgia Women of Achievement's honoring of Dr. Alice Woodby McKane (1865–1948); you may view the video here. Graduating in 1892 with a medical degree, Alice moved to Augusta to become a resident physician and nursing instructor at the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. At that time, she was the only black female physician in Georgia.

Nancy Wilkerson has been named the director of sales at Barnsley Resort, a luxury boutique resort located just north of Atlanta. In her new role, Nancy is responsible for new business development and enhancing the repeat client experience for corporate meetings and events. She now leads the sales team and all strategic efforts for the corporate group market. Nancy came to Barnsley Resort from Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort.

 Ragan Cohn, CAE, Vice President, National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, and her husband Hank, welcomed a baby boy on August 12. Adam Buckley Cohn weighed in at 9 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 21.5 inches long. Both mom and baby are doing great! |
 Ashley Wilson, Sales Manager for Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, and her husband welcomed their first child earlier this summer. Harrison Tucker Wilson was born on June 24, weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces and was 18 1/2 inches long. Both baby and mom are doing well. Ashley returned from maternity leave earlier this month. |

It's that time of year again - time to check your GSAE profile to make sure everything is exactly how you want it before our 2015 GSAE Membership Directory goes to print later this fall. From the GSAE homepage, go to Interact then Update My Profile. From there, you'll see a blue link to view/edit profile that will allow you to make any necessary changes. Of course, you may always email changes to janeanne@gsae.org if that's easier. All updates must be received by September 18.

The GSAE Nominating Committee is soliciting names of members interested in serving on the GSAE Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee will include Past Chair, Aubie Knight, CIC, CRM; Chair Susan Cheshire, CAE; Chair elect Jim Fowler, CAE; and two at large association executive members, LeeAnne Minnick and Barry White.
Five seats for individual association member directors and one seat for a corporate supplier director will be available for two-year terms, beginning January 1, 2015. If you or someone you know would like to be considered, please send the name and a brief description of qualifications to Wendy. All candidates must be members in good standing. Deadline for nominations is September 15, 2014. The slate of nominees will be offered to the membership for review no later than Friday, October 10. Board members and officers will be accepted and installed at the GSAE Annual Business Meeting during the Holiday Luncheon & Silent Auction December 10th at the Georgia Aquarium. |

GSAE recognizes excellence by presenting a variety of awards to members. To nominate a member for an award, simply contact Wendy Kavanagh, CAE, President, at wendy@gsae.org. For more information about the awards program, visit the Awards page of the GSAE website. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, October 1, 2014.
Individual Awards include: The Clifford M. Clarke Award is GSAE's highest honor and is presented to honor a member for an outstanding career of leadership and service to associations in Georgia. It is named for the late Cliff Clarke, president emeritus of the Arthritis Foundation and the first Georgian to serve as chief elected officer of ASAE. Any active individual member of GSAE is eligible for the Award, with the exception of current officers, directors, staff, members of the Awards Committee and previous recipients. Honorary and retired members who have worked in the Georgia association community within the past two years and former staff members who meet the other criteria as well are also eligible. The Alan R. Johnson Award was established in 1994 and named in memory of a former Chair of the GSAE Foundation. It is given to an association executive in Georgia who has demonstrated qualities of teamwork (ability to work with and support others), vision (ability to see possibilities for making things happen and communicating this vision to others) and servant leadership (willingness to reach out beyond work and home to benefit the community). The Emerging Leader Award is presented to an association executive with ten years or less of experience in associations who demonstrates leadership through service to GSAE, their own association and to their community. Chief staff executives (CEO, executive director, executive vice president, etc.) are not eligible. Nominees must have been a member of GSAE for at least one year. The Corporate Member Representative of the Year is presented to the corporate member who has demonstrated outstanding and continuous service to the association community in Georgia. |

The Georgia Society of Association Executives is proud to partner with Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundations’ professional development program for non-profit executives, and offer two $500 partial tuition scholarships to attend Winter Institute in 2015. The two scholarships, available to any of our members, will be awarded to students attending Institute for the first time to assist with enrollment fees and cannot be combined with any other Institute scholarships.
For over 90 years, Institute has educated association and chamber leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices, and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become strong business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you can earn up to 96 credit hours toward your CAE certification as Institute’s curriculum is directly tied to the CAE’s body of knowledge. Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence. The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry. Feedback Systems and Michelle Hatch, Hatch Marketing & Communications, have compiled the 2014 Meeting Planning Professionals Survey e-Report, which is available for download here. The goal of the survey was to gain a better understanding of current conditions within the "large meeting" marketplace.
Four key findings came out of the 2014 survey: • The industry is ripe for logistics innovation to address meeting planners' biggest challenges. • Attendance growth is stagnant and expected to decline over the next three years. • The majority of respondents report a high level of repeat attendance. • While the majority of attendees book within the hotel block, out-of-block bookings can be costly. |
