In a letter to Van Arsdale, Hegar emphasized his priorities of customer service and consistent policy by way of a simplified tax code. The comptroller also emphasized the need to make tax policy in an open, transparent way. 

"Responsibilities like collecting the state's taxes impact every Texan, and it's important to me for this office to be responsive and accountable," Hegar said in the letter. "Part of that accountability is to ensure associations like yours, which represent Texas businesses, have a seat at the table as my office develops and implements tax policy. Having groups like yours as a partner in the process of developing workable Texas tax policy will help grow our economy in the best possible way."
