New AGC Houston Member Celebrates 20th Anniversary As Small Minority Business
Being raised on a farm in Lake Providence, LA, Sarah learned the value of hard work at an early age. The lesson that shaped her and contributed to the success of her business over the years is simply "if you don’t work, you don’t eat." With this wisdom and insight, she encourages each of her employees to work at a high level of excellence, and she emphasizes providing the best service at each jobsite. Her motto is simple: "Do the job right the first time, and we’ll always have work." She credits her work ethic to living on a farm where growing your own food was the only way to survive. She understood there were multiple phases of growing food that was required to survive.
Like many entrepreneurs, Sarah started Working Object Janitorial Service to solve a problem and meet a need. After hearing the frustrations and complaints from her friend who was a home builder in the affluent River Oaks subdivision, Shoemaker saw a business opportunity and Working Object was born. She quickly realized the builder was not in the cleaning business, but his business needed someone to do post-construction clean up at the construction sites. Since its inception, the company has grown from working with one small developer to major contractors who builds schools, office buildings, self-storage units, hospitals, and more.
