Linbeck Group, LLC recently completed downtown Houston’s historic Sunset Coffee Building restoration, located at Allen’s Landing near Main and Commerce streets. Purchased by Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) in 2003 as part of its master plan to transform a 10-mile stretch of the neglected Buffalo Bayou into a thriving waterfront, the 12,700-square-foot former coffee-roasting facility required extensive work to rehabilitate the 1910 industrial building into a recreational and cultural center featuring a rooftop terrace for events, an outdoor plaza, a canoe, kayak and bike rental facility, café and office space for Buffalo Bayou Partnership.
Designed by the nationally recognized architecture firm Lake | Flato, along with local architect BNIM and landscape architect SWA Group, the Sunset Coffee Building will be Buffalo Bayou’s premier recreational and cultural center. The building will house BBP’s offices, a rooftop terrace, a paddle craft/bike rental facility, and an outdoor plaza.
Recent flooding in Louisiana has prompted concern over whether enough construction workers will be available to help rebuild, but Ken Naquin, CEO of Louisiana Associated General Contractors, said the same concern existed but was never realized after Hurricane Katrina. Dozens of out-of-state contractors have filed to do business in Louisiana, and hundreds have asked about getting licensed.
