AGC News

In the wake of an AGC meeting with the head of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and an AGC-backed letter from dozens of members of Congress, OSHA on October 19 published new guidance to clarify its injury and illness record-keeping and reporting rule. The guidance re-calibrates the agency's position relating to post-incident drug testing in the context of employer discouragement of or retaliation for employee injury and illness reporting.

Register today for AGC's complimentary webinar—($49 for non-members)—discussing this topic and the record-keeping and reporting rule as a whole on Oct. 31.

Each year the AGC Education and Research Foundation offers undergraduate and graduate-level scholarships to students enrolled in ABET- or ACCE-accredited construction management or construction-related engineering programs. The application opened July 1, 2016 and closes November 1, 2016.

Over $10 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 4,000 students attending colleges and universities across the country. Through endowments made by AGC members and supporters, as well as AGC chapters, the Education and Research Foundation awards over 100 scholarships each year to students dedicated to pursuing a career in the construction industry.
AGC of America is proud to announce the launch of our 2017 project award competitions! The Alliant Build America Awards (including the Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence category) and AGC in the Community competitions are now accepting applications.

Red, White and Blue were the theme colors this year at R & M Service, Inc.'s annual Fish Fry, which celebrated its 15th anniversary on Wednesday, October 26, 2016.  All hands were on deck to greet guests, fry fish, and serve fried Tilapia, fish tacos, sides, desserts and drinks. The lively event was held under a massive canopy, complete with a country western band. Hundreds of people representing a broad spectrum of individuals from Houston's design/build community enjoyed a lunchtime filled with good friends, food, and great door prizes! Congratulations to AGC Houston's Director of Finance, Amy Mui, who won $100!

News you can Use
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Houston North Area Office office recently released its "Houston Fatalities and Catastrophes" report, which documents fatalities and catastrophes in the greater Houston ares from October 1, 2018 through September 30, 2016.

The report cites both construction and general industry incidents.

The $162 million expansion project will add approximately 200,000 square feet for widebody aircraft hangar capacity and maintenance support services, create 200 new jobs.

United Airlines, in partnership with the City of Houston and the Houston Airport System, broke ground Oct. 25, 2016, on the airline’s new United Technical Operations Center at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The project, which is the next phase of United’s ongoing expansion of facilities at its Houston hub, will add approximately 200,000 square feet of additional hangar capacity for maintaining widebody aircraft, in addition to a new warehouse distribution center, technical services building and administrative offices.

The new center is part of United's larger update project at its Houston hub, as the airline is undergoing a multi-million-dollar overhaul of its terminals at IAH. Those plans include a redesign of Terminal B South, Terminal C and Terminal E; adding 8,000 community iPads; and new restaurants from well-known Houston chefs, such as Chris Shepherd of Underbelly and Roland Laurenzo of El Tiempo Cantina.

Many AGC Houston member companies are working on the massive project.
