Thirty-nine states added construction jobs between January 2016 and January 2017, while 38 states and Washington,D.C. added construction jobs between December and January, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America and the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Many firms reported not finding enough qualified workers to hire as they work to keep pace with growing demand.

On Monday, April 3, 2017, Ethan Cowles, principal at FMI, will present key findings on today’s prefabrication environment and discuss relevant implications for contractors.
The event will take place at Marek’s training facility and will begin with a networking opportunity at 4:30 p.m., followed by a presentation and discussion from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
JE Dunn Houston office leader, Emre Ozcan, (pictured with microphone) was a panelist at Bisnow’s Big South Healthcare Event held at the Westin Oaks Galleria Houston on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Along with representatives from Memorial Hermann, Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston Methodist Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center, they discussed a myriad of issues concerning the topic "Healthcare Design & Construction: Facilities Management."
While discussing various challenges and possible solutions, Ozcan emphasized the importance of a collaborative preconstruction effort involving all project stakeholders and the importance of advanced technologies such as Building Information Modeling.

ACE Mentor Houston held its annual Building Blocks Breakfast on Tuesday, February 21st at the Junior League of Houston. The event honors the contributions and dedication of the local mentor teams and awards are presented to the mentors of the year. With more than 280 students being mentored throughout Houston, ACE Mentor Houston is one of the largest ACE affiliates in the country.

The Environmental Protection Agency's 2017 construction general permit, effective February 16, 2017, makes site operators jointly and severally liable for infractions. Several industry groups oppose the provision.
Congress is expected to focus on flood insurance reform in the spring, as the National Flood Insurance Program will expire Sept. 30. Some lawmakers support the development of a private flood insurance market as part of reform.

New documents include Program Requirements and separate Industry Procedures for Construction, General Industry, Maritime, and Disaster Site Worker.
AGC Houston members are invited to join the Houston Revit Users group, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month. Revit and BIM application users range from beginner to expert skill levels. Since 2002, the Houston Area Revit Users Group (HARUG) has been the main resource in the area for Revit Users, AutoCAD Architecture (previously Architectural Desktop), AutoCAD and other BIM-related tools.

On March 7, 2017, with the support of the AGC Sporting Clays Event Committee, the chapter raised approximately $30,000 to benefit the Government Affairs Committee's Advocacy Fund. The sold out event brought 56 teams on both shooting courses at the Greater Houston Gun Club. W.S. Bellows Construction Corp. and Brookstone, LP, were recognized for Safety Excellence at the Willis Towers Safety Awards Breakfast March 8, 2017 in conjunction with the AGC of America Convention in Las Vegas.
The companies were judged nationally for their overall safety and health program, commitment to safety regarding new programs, increased employee involvement in safety, management’s commitment to safety and no fatality or multi-catastrophic injuries in the past year.
Congratulations to W.S. Bellows Construction Corp. on winning both First Place in the Building Division 50,000 to 750,000 work-hours category and the Grand Award for Construction Safety Excellence. The company was selected among each category's first-place winners and determined the "Best of the Best" of the 2017 Construction Safety Awards.

Congratulations to Linbeck Group, LLC on winning an AGC of America Alliant Build America Award for the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center/UC Health Proton Therapy Center in the Building New $10-$99 M category! The $120 million facility is one of the most advanced proton research and cancer treatment centers in the world.
The awards recognize general contractors and specialty contractors working as prime contractor for projects completed between November 1, 2016 and November 1, 2017. The awards were presented at a ceremony on March 8 at the 98th annual convention in Las Vegas.
