As 2018 closes and the door opens on many possibilities to achieve and excel in 2019, I, along with the AGC Houston staff, want to extend our gratitude for the continued support you have shown throughout the year.
Without your contributions (whether through talent, time or financial), we would not be among the most engaged and proactive AGC chapters in the nation. Our group of members is a tight-knit community that has represented one unified voice for Houston's commercial construction industry since 1923. I can't forget to mention the importance we — and our members — share in giving back to our communities throughout the year, and especially now. In the spirit of the holiday season, AGC Houston has made a charitable donation to Rahab's Retreat And Ranch, on behalf of Susan Bryant and AGC. Following a long-standing tradition, this biennial charitable contribution is selected by the outgoing Chairman's spouse. This organization helps women who have left abusive situations and provides much needed support and resources. Thank you Sue for bringing Rahab’s Retreat And Ranch to light and for your support during James’ two-year service as Chairman! I believe that Christmas is a perfect time to slow down and cherish our families and friends above all else. All the best to you and your families during this holiday season. Jerry Nevlud Member News
Santa’s helpers from Slack & Co. Contracting, Inc. are all smiles about their donation of 10 bicycles to BIKE4SMILES, Tellepsen’s holiday program. According to Tellepsen's Safety Director Susan Phillips, the goal is to give 2,000 donated bikes to children in the Houston area this Christmas. Slack & Co. hopes these bikes make a positive change in the lives of the young people who receive them.
News you can Use
In the two years since Donald Trump's election, the economy has grown and unemployment has reached 3.7 percent, but construction companies are still dealing with the combined effects of looming tariffs and the struggle to find qualified labor.
Technological advances, such as carbon capture and storage, and emissions standards policies are the keys to making greener cement, writes Jeffrey Rissman, co-author of "Designing Climate Solutions: A Policy Guide to Low-Carbon Energy."
The labor shortage requires contractors to become more efficient, and lean construction can help reduce waste and improve productivity. In one example, a contractor worked with an architect on prefabricated bathroom pods at a hotel project, and the effort reduced installation time to 11 days.

Safety Professionals representing every aspect of the commercial construction industry headed to Cedar Creek on December 6, 2018 for the fourth annual AGC Houston Safety Professionals Happy Hour.
The festivities were livened by "DJ" Eddie Escamilla, Karsten Interior Services, LP, and by dance-offs by a few brave volunteers. Thanks to everyone who came out, including our sponsors, members of our Safety Committee and the Vets in Construction.
