Gov. Abbott Signs Key AGC Legislation into Law 

After the Texas Legislature adjourned sine die on May 31, Governor Abbott had until June 20 to sign or veto bills that made it to his desk. This session, our top priority was Senate Bill 219, which would make contractors no longer liable for design defects. This bill was signed into law on June 16 and is effective September 1, 2021. 

Other notable priority bills that were signed into law are: Senate Bill 338 – Creating uniform general conditions (UGCs) for K-12 building construction; House Bill 3069 – Shortening the statute of repose for public work to 8 years plus 1 year to sue; House Bill 2416 – Closing the commercial general liability coverage gap for attorney’s fees; and Senate Bill 968 – Language that keeps construction open and essential during a pandemic.

29th Annual AGC Houston BBQ Cook-Off
June 18-19, 2021

The Houston commercial construction industry came together for AGC Houston’s 29th Annual Barbecue Cook-Off and Fair June 18 and 19, 2021. Twenty cook teams competed in categories that included best theme and best margarita, salsa, Bloody Mary, dessert, ribs, brisket, and chicken.

This year’s event raised funds for Paws for Heroes, a nonprofit organization that rescues homeless dogs and professionally trains them to serve as companion dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD, at no cost to the veteran. A big thank you to all of the participating teams, sponsors, volunteers and attendees for supporting the event.

Congratulations to Grand Champion, Mason Road Sheet Metal; Reserve Grand Champion, The Beck Group, Team 1, and to all the winning teams. Special congratulations as well to Lance Smith of Hoar Construction who received the Ralph Morton Spirit Award.

On June 23, 2021, AGC Houston hosted a Leadership AGC panel discussion with three seasoned construction leaders who shared how people and experiences have impacted their careers. Lead by Tony Ali of Peckar & Abramson, P.C., and Shannon Davis of Marek Brothers Systems, Inc., the group heard from Jim Stevenson of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Mike Holland of Marek Brother Systems, Inc., and James Bryant of Anslow Bryant Construction.
