Thanks to the Patrick J. Kiley Excellence in Leadership Awards, seven Houston-area college-bound and university students received at total of $45,000 to pursue degrees in a construction-related discipline. AGC Houston held the annual event on April 30 at The HESS Club, which featured guest speaker James Furr, Managing Principal Emeritus, Gensler.

AGC Houston also honored Edwin Villarreal, TAS Commercial Concrete Construction, LLC, with the 2014 Standard of Excellence Award. In addition, AGC of America awarded scholarships to four university students during the event.

Thank you to the 62 AGC and AIA foursomes who teed it up at the Champions Golf Club on Monday, April 28, 2014, for the annual tournament. In its 19th year, the tournament drew golfers representing the design and build industry as well as owners. Played in a four-person scramble format, the tournament includes green fees, golf carts, lunch, on-course beverages and snacks, awards and a dinner buffet.

Congratulations to the teams and to the players who took home an award and especially to event underwriter, A&E - The Graphic Complex.

 

Held on two courses, the tournament benefited three charities this year: the ACE Mentor Program Houston, Inc., Dream Catchers Stables, and The SummerHouse.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division will host a free three-day compliance seminar for federal contractors, unions and employees to provide information on the rules governing prevailing wage requirements under the Davis-Bacon Act, the McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act and Executive Order 13495 wage rules for nondisplacement of qualified workers.

The seminar will be held May 7-9 at the Houston Astros Baseball Club, Minute Maid Park, 501 Crawford St., Houston.

Houston held onto its No. 5 spot on Forbes’ latest listing of the best cities for jobs. To compile its "Best Big Cities for Jobs 2014" list, Forbes ranked all 398 metropolitan statistical areas using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from November 2002 through January 2014. The big cities list is composed of the 66 MSAs that each have more than 450,000 jobs.

Memorial Hermann Health System is set to break ground on a $650 million expansion and renovation project at its Texas Medical Center campus, and this is just one of several projects in the city's construction pipeline. Currently more than $1 billion worth of health care projects are in various stages of development in the city, including a project for Methodist Hospital. "We're expanding capacity where parts of the community are growing," said Sid Sanders, Methodist's senior vice president. "It's really being driven by demand. We're trying to find a balance and staying ahead of the curve."

AGC updates and maps the states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, that have state law authorizing CM At-Risk, Design-Build, and P3 projects through the Construction State Law Matrix at www.agc.org/slm. In 2013, the Matrix reported 10 new states with laws allowing CM At-Risk on transportation projects. This brings the total of jurisdictions with at least some authority for CM At-Risk for transportation projects to 35. As of 2014, 39 jurisdictions now have at least some form of P3 authority. New reference maps show legal authority for design-build, CM At-Risk and P3 state authority under the AGC construction law page.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division has increased its focus on identifying and resolving instances of employer retaliation against workers in the Southwestern U.S. In fiscal year 2012, the division concluded seven cases where employers were accused of retaliating against workers.

The unemployment rate in construction dropped to the lowest April level in seven years as contractors added 32,000 workers to payrolls in April, bringing industry employment to 6.0 million—the highest level since June 2009, according to an analysis of new government data by AGC of America. Association officials warned that it is essential to revive and expand training opportunities before the industry runs short of workers.

For more than two decades, teams of architects, designers, and engineers have taken their tools to East Beach in Galveston for one of the world’s largest sandcastle competitions. The Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been hosting this competition since 1986.
