AGC Houston and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are partnering to promote Fall Protection during the 2014 Safety Stand Down June 2-6, 2014. Multiple construction organizations will be supporting this industry-wide effort to emphasize and promote jobsite safety throughout the nation.

AGC Houston Members may submit any project(s) completed between April 1, 2012, and April 30, 2014, located in the Chapter territory. A panel of judges will tour the selected entry projects on Friday, June 27.The biennial event was created in 1994 to recognize AGC Houston members for their consistent excellence in construction, valuable contributions to the community and their demonstrated commitment to skill, integrity and responsibility.

Participants will learn notice deadlines and requirements for filing lien and
bond claims; How to obtain forms to use for claims; How to obtain project
information; How to avoid project information; How to avoid common problems with lien and bond claims; How to document a claim and what is not covered by a
lien or bond claim.

This session will build on the Liens and Bonds speech with an advanced
discussion of liens and how they are enforced. The session will also cover a
variety of payment topics such as spotting important issues in joint check
agreements, the new law related to releases and the Construction Trust Fund Act.

Safety |
This course is designed to help students build essential lifesaving skills.
Students will be qualified to train others in Medic First Aid/CPR, use of
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), disease prevention from Bloodborne
Pathogens, and Infant Child rescue skills and AED applications.

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the OSHA 10- and
30-hour construction safety and health Outreach Training Program to their
employees and other interested groups.

This course covers the OSHA standards, policies, and procedures in general
industry.

This course is designed to provide entry-level construction workers general
awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards on a construction site.

Learn to make your environmental management system (EMS) effective so that you
can reduce liability, ensure compliance, and improve operating efficiency.

This new class has been developed for supervisors who have drivers in the
field.This class will provide excellent information for anyone in a supervisory
role to recognize the signs of alcohol and drug abuse. You do not have to
be a DOT-regulated carrier/employer to attend this class.

Leadership and management strategies are essential items for any environmental professional's toolbox. We invite you to join your peers at the 2014 AGC Contractors Environmental Conference (CEC) on June 12-13, 2014, in Arlington, Virginia.
This year's conference will focus on developing and honing these strategies—based on the feedback received from past attendees and responses to a survey from AGC's Environmental Forum members. The 2014 CEC will provide invaluable resources for contractors in the building, highway and transportation, federal and heavy, and utility infrastructure markets.

Construction labor and employment law best practices shared by specialists from around the country.
The AGC Labor and Employment Law Council held its 30 th Annual Construction Labor Law Symposium on May 1 and 2, 2014, in Washington, D.C. Attorneys and chapter labor relations managers from across the country shared information and learned about the latest developments in construction labor and employment law.

Construction companies added jobs in 39 states including the District of Columbia over the past 12 months, and in 29 states and Washington, D.C. between March and April, according to an analysis by AGC of America of Labor Department data. Association officials welcomed the mostly positive figures but cautioned that the industry’s recovery remained fragile, with construction employment levels below prior peaks in every state except North Dakota.

The ConsensusDocs Coalition is publishing a new Construction Management Agency standard agreement. The ConsensusDocs 831 Agreement Between Owner and Construction Manager (CM Does Not Provide General Conditions) provides an alternative to the recently released ConsensusDocs 830 Agreement, in which the CM provides General Conditions. The new agreement was created to provide greater clarity in defining costs, fees and profit to avoid potential claims.Through the AGC Contract Documents Forum, AGC is actively involved in writing and endorsing best practice standard construction in a coalition effort called ConsensusDocs. AGC endorses all 100+ standard construction contracts.

AGC updates and maps the states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, that have state law authorizing CM At-Risk, Design-Build, and P3 projects through the Construction State Law Matrix at www.agc.org/slm. In 2013, the Matrix reported 10 new states with laws allowing CM At-Risk on transportation projects. This brings the total of jurisdictions with at least some authority for CM At-Risk for transportation projects to 35. As of 2014, 39 jurisdictions now have at least some form of P3 authority. New reference maps show legal authority for design-build, CM At-Risk and P3 state authority under the AGC construction law page.

On Thursday, May 15, 2014, President Barack Obama marked the dedication of the long-awaited September 11 Memorial Museum with families, survivors and rescuers at the site. The September 11 Memorial Museum he stated is a "sacred place of healing and hope" that will ensure "generations yet unborn will never forget" the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. "It is an honor for us to join in your memories, to recall and to reflect, and above all to reaffirm the true spirit of 9/11: love, compassion, sacrifice and to enshrine it forever in the heart of our nation," the President said before the gray bedrock of the fallen towers. For more than two decades, teams of architects, designers, and engineers have taken their tools to East Beach in Galveston for one of the world’s largest sandcastle competitions. The Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been hosting this competition since 1986.

Houston held onto its No. 5 spot on Forbes’ latest listing of the best cities for jobs. To compile its "Best Big Cities for Jobs 2014" list, Forbes ranked all 398 metropolitan statistical areas using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from November 2002 through January 2014. The big cities list is composed of the 66 MSAs that each have more than 450,000 jobs.
