AGC Houston is proud that so many safety stand-down demonstrations took place across the greater Houston area construction jobsites May 5-15. Thank you to all of the AGC Houston members who took part in the National Safety Stand-Down to prevent falls in construction. Be sure to send Kim Mason your completed forms and photos. AGC Houston is pleased to announce the rebirth of the Employment Practices Committee, which specializes in issues facing human resource professionals, labor and employment attorneys and anyone dealing with Department of Labor issues.
The committee is open to all AGC Houston members interested in DOL compliance issues and HR best practices.

Education/Training |
To develop the tools needed to build Lean, AGC has developed the Lean Construction Education Program (Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). Construction professionals at all experience levels learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into a Lean operating system.
Topics include variation pull in production, the Last Planner® System, lean supply chains and assembly, lean design/ pre-construction, and problem-solving principles.

Lean Construction challenges all project stakeholders to develop and apply better ways to manage the overall construction process. Unit 1: Variation in Production Systems is a half-day course that introduces you to the foundational concepts of Lean Construction.

ATTENTION! The First Aid/CPR/AED class has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 27. Participants who complete this course will meet the requirements of OSHA Paragraph 1926.50 and receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid and CPR/AED wallet card .

Participants will learn notice deadlines and requirements for filing lien and bond claims; How to obtain forms to use for claims; How to obtain project information; How to avoid project information; How to avoid common problems with lien and bond claims; How to document a claim and what is is not covered by a lien or bond claim.
|
This session will build on the Liens and Bonds speech with an advanced discussion of liens and how they are enforced. The session will also cover a variety of payment topics such as spotting important issues in joint check agreements, the new law related to releases and the construction trust fund act.

The AGC Houston Safety Committee will be holding their next meeting on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 7:15 a.m. at the AGC Houston office. The Safety Committee is open to all those interested in promoting the safety and education of the construction industry. Interested in becoming a member? Construction firms added 45,000 jobs in April and 280,000 over 12 months, as the sector's unemployment rate fell to a nine-year April low of 7.5 percent, according to an analysis by AGC of America.

Adam Delk has joined JE Dunn Construction Company as Vice President, responsible for project planning, strategic planning for the business unit and client relations. Delk has managed the planning and construction of many large-scale projects, primarily healthcare related. He graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's of science in construction science and a minor in business.
Delk is a member of the Rice Design Alliance, Construction Owners Association of America, and American Society for Healthcare Engineering and has been actively involved with the Christus Foundation for five years.

Eighty poker players brought their game at the CLC Texas Hold 'Em Poker fundraiser on May 14, 2015. It was a memorable evening—whether the chips were up or down—as the tournament lasted more than four hours. Congratulations to AGC Houston's Jerry Nevlud, President/CEO, who celebrated 15 years with the chapter on Friday, May 15. A University of Texas graduate, Nevlud worked with the Marek Family of Companies prior to joining AGC. He currently serves as President of the AGC Executive Leadership Council and is completing a leadership program with the American Leadership Forum/Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter.
Of his leadership, AGC Houston Chairman Bill Scott, Linbeck Group, LLC, stated: "Jerry Nevlud has grown into a
leader who is respected both in our local community and nationally for
his leadership. His enthusiasm and attitude makes him the perfect man
to lead our association. All of the board members are comforted with

Construction industry executives, training directors and HR professionals are asked to join their peers in completing a brief survey to gauge the changes and practices for recruiting, retaining and training construction industry personnel.

The bill that would create a fund to fix up to $1.5 billion in deferred maintenance on state infrastructure breezed through the Texas House on Thursday by a 146-0 vote. Having already passed the Senate, the bill now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott for consideration.

The $10 million renovation of Francis Hall at Texas A&M University puts the school in a one-of-a-kind position among institutions of higher education in the state. It is the only building anywhere in Texas dedicated solely to the education of construction sciences, according to Joe Horlen, who heads up the Department of Construction Science in College Station.

Houston City Council Member Dwight E. Boykins has initiated the "Workforce, Job Training, 2nd Chance Initiative" to assist the city's workforce shortage and to empower Houstonians by improving their quality of life and financial stability. To this end, a job fair will be held May 21 on the campus of Texas Southern University.
