AGC Houston is now accepting nominations for the Ray Lambright Excellence In Safety Award, which recognizes a safety professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and a personal commitment in directing their company’s safety and health program in advancing the safety of all construction workers.

The Construction Career Collaborative Town Hall Meeting scheduled for June 16 at AGC Houston from 4-6 p.m. has been rescheduled for July. Further details will be announced soon. The June 30 Town Hall Meeting is still planned. Contact Maria Aimone for more information at (713) 843-3780.

Each year, AGC Houston recognizes companies that have participated in the Safety Stand-Down and the AGC Safety Excellence Award. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 15, 7:30 - 9 a.m. at the Junior League of Houston. This year's meeting will feature keynote speaker Derek Daly, international racing champion, best-selling author and TV's face of motor sports.
In addition, the 2015 AGC Safety Excellence Awards will be presented and we will recognize all member companies that took part in the Safety Stand-Down with a certificate of participation.

To develop the tools needed to build lean, AGC has developed the Lean Construction Education Program (units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). Construction professionals at all experience levels learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into a lean operating system.
June 25: Unit 2 - Pull In Production is a half-day course that introduces the concept of pull as a means to reliable workflow.
July 7: Unit 3 - Lean Workstructuring is a half-day course that introduces an essential component of the Last Planner System, Lean Workstructuring.
July 23: Unit 4 - The Last Planner System is a half-day course that delves in creating six-week look-ahead schedules and weekly work plans.

This construction 10-hour safety course is designed for entry-level construction workers. It provides information about worker rights and employer responsibilities, and it provides basic awareness training on the recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of workplace hazards.

This course is designed to help students build essential lifesaving skills.

This 10-hour construction-safety course covers the safety requirements as contained in 29 CFR 1926.

This hands-on course is for supervisors and workers involved in rigging or hoisting operations while using cranes, heavy equipment, truck cranes or other equipment in any industry.

Wesley Guidry, Cherry Companies Vice President of Portable Concrete and Asphalt Recycling, announces the promotion of Patrick Bridges to Divisional Manager. Bridges has been with Cherry for five years and has served in a number of roles that began as a heavy equipment operator.

Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing raised nearly $11,000 for The WorkFaith Connection at its annual customer appreciation event held at Minute Maid Park. Chamberlin matched funds raised in a raffle among clients and friends who attended the event. Thanks to its efforts, the event grew its fundraising by 21 percent compared to last year.

About 200 members of the Rice Design Alliance gathered for the 2015 Annual Membership Meeting and Reception on Wednesday, June 10, at Kirksey-designed LEED Platinum Certified 3009 Post Oak Boulevard in Uptown Houston. The event also served to elect new directors to the board and introduce officers for 2015-2016. AGC Houston was honored with an award to mark its 25 years of corporate sponsorship. During the meeting, Kirksey Executive Vice President Bob Inaba discussed the building's architecture.

Based on its high volume of STEM jobs compared to other industries, the Bayou City ranked as one of the hottest metros for advanced industries. Ranked by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit think tank based in Washington, D.C., Houston’s deep sea engineering and technology engineering were said to reshape global energy markets and "represent quintessential advanced industry breakthroughs."

Rice University will soon break ground on a $2 million sports facility, the latest such project in Houston. The project will include a grandstand, enclosed press box and team facilities for soccer, track and field, and cross country. The grandstand will use a mixture of chair-back and bleacher seating to accommodate 1,500 people. Houston-based Jackson & Ryan Architects will design the grandstand, which will replace a nearly 50-year-old facility. Information about a general contractor was not immediately available.

Construction firms added 17,000 jobs in May and 273,000 over 12 months, as the sector's unemployment rate fell to 6.7 percent, the lowest May rate since 2006, according to an analysis by AGC. Association officials noted that the job gains come as the private and public sectors are increasing investments in construction services.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides public access to industry regulatory compliance and enforcement data online. The Enforcement and Compliance History Online website integrates data from EPA information systems for public use.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on May 27 completed and released a new and final rule on the water features over which they will claim jurisdiction. The new rule is the culmination of their long and controversial effort to align federal regulations with the latest U.S. Supreme Court decisions and simultaneously make permitting decisions easier.

The $10 million renovation of Francis Hall at Texas A&M University puts the school in a one-of-a-kind position among institutions of higher education in the state. It is the only building anywhere in Texas dedicated solely to the education of construction sciences, according to Joe Horlen, who heads up the Department of Construction Science in College Station.

Construction firms added jobs in 40 states and the District of Columbia between April 2014 and April 2015 and in 30 states and D.C. between March and April, according to an analysis of Labor Department data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said that even as construction employment continues to expand, workforce shortages and infrastructure funding challenges threaten future growth.
