Each year, AGC Houston recognizes companies that have participated in the Safety Stand-Down and the AGC Safety Excellence Awards. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 15, 7:00 - 9 a.m., at the Junior League of Houston. This year's meeting will feature keynote speaker Derek Daly, international racing champion, best-selling author and TV's face of motor sports.

AGC Houston is now accepting nominations for the Ray Lambright Excellence In Safety Award and the AGC Houston Safety Excellence Awards. Nominate deserving safety professionals and specialty contractors that demonstrate leadership in safety management today. Hurry, nominations are due July 8, 2015.

All specialty contractor firms are invited to hear a panel of general and specialty contractors, as well as owner representatives, discuss how the industry is working together to address the workforce shortage. Featuring panelists, Jim Stevenson, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.; Steve Mechler, Balfour Beatty Construction; Kevin Camarata, Camarata Masonry Systems, Ltd.; and Spencer Moore, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

To develop the tools needed to build lean, AGC has developed the Lean Construction Education Program (units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). Construction professionals at all experience levels learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into a lean operating system.
This month, AGC Houston offers Unit 3 and 4.
July 7: Unit 3 - Lean Workstructuring is a half-day course that introduces an essential component of the Last Planner System, Lean Workstructuring.
July 23: Unit 4 - The Last Planner System is a half-day course that delves in creating six-week look-ahead schedules and weekly work plans.

CM-BIM candidates must successfully complete the four AGC BIM Education Program courses, provide AGC with record to completion and have approved application in advance of exam.
|
Completion of this course meets the requirements of OSHA Paragraph 1926.50, and participants will receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid and CPR/AED wallet card valid for two years upon course completion.
|
Among numerous topics, this class will cover notice deadlines and requirements
for filing lien and bond claims; how to obtain project information; how to avoid common problems when lien and
bond claims.

This course covers the OSHA standards for the construction industry found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1926 along with other relevant policies, procedures, and safety and health principles for the construction industry. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous and most frequently cited by OSHA.
|
This course will provide an overview of the risk management and insurance profession from the health and safety program perspective.
|
This course covers the OSHA Fall Protection Standards for construction and general industry and current fall protection methods. Students will participate in workshops demonstrating the inspection and use of fall protection equipment, residential construction fall protection, training requirements, and developing a fall protection program.
|
This course is the update required every four years for all OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainers for General Industry. It provides timely information on OSHA General Industry standards, policies and regulations.

Cadence McShane Construction Company has selected Colby Rose as Vice President of its Houston office. Rose is responsible for the management of the firm's project personnel and support teams, the development and expansion of new business opportunities, and the strategic planning and execution of the firm's growth within its key market sectors. Rose joined the company in 2008 and recently relocated from Dallas to oversee the firm's growth.

AGC Houston Director of Safety Kim Mason taught a two-day OSHA 10-hour class June 24 and 25 designed to provide construction field employees with critical information on safety and health hazards. Registration is open for the OSHA 30-Hour class July 8. Click on link below for details.
James Bryant, Anslow Bryant Construction, Ltd., along with Sean Sachtleben, Bryson Wallace and Miguel Garcia of Linbeck Group, LLC, taught the Unit 2: Pull In Production class on June 25. The newly designed lean program launched June 9 with Unit 1: Variation In Production Systems. AGC Houston thanks Linbeck Group, LLC and Tellepsen for their assistance in researching and developing the AGC of America program.
Some of the graduates of the Leadership AGC Class of 2015 met on June 18 at Karbach Brewery to celebrate the completion of the year-long class. The Howard Hughes Corporation recently broke ground on Lakeland Village Center, the first commercial development in the master planned community Bridgeland. Phase 1 (20 acres) delivers in spring 2016 and will have 84,000 square feet of mixed-use space, including retail, restaurants and professional/medical offices. The company owns, develops and manages masterplanned communities including The Woodlands and Bridgeland in the greater Houston area. Forbes magazine's May 25 issue features a story on the real estate powerhouse.

Baylor St. Luke's has filed more building permits totaling $49 million for its McNair campus according to a breaking article posted in The Houston Business Journal . The permits list build outs for several floors of the McNair campus, located at 7200 Cambridge St. The permits listed AGC Houston member J.E. Dunn Construction Co. as the contractor.
The Houston Business Journal took a tour of the campus in October, and at the time, hospital execs said the plans were to build out different facets of the campus in stages. There are also plans to build an additional patient tower and medical office building, which could start this year.

Based on its high volume of STEM jobs compared to other industries, the Bayou City ranked as one of the hottest metros for advanced industries. Ranked by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit think tank based in Washington, D.C., Houston’s deep sea engineering and technology engineering were said to reshape global energy markets and "represent quintessential advanced industry breakthroughs."

Texas added 33,200 jobs in May, the third highest gain in the nation. Although the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3 percent, a report released by Wells Fargo Economics Group suggests that Texas has so far avoided a recession.

The following list contains capital projects listed in the approved 2016-17 budget by department. The projects total more than $1.3 billion and reach nearly $2 billion when added to funding reserved for the state's aging infrastructure. Funding amounts for those "deferred maintenance" projects are listed at the bottom.

About 90% of the expansion work to widen and deepen the Panama Canal has been finished as the project enters its final stage. The third set of locks is 88% complete, and 16 rolling gates have been installed. Now, more than 150 valves to control water movement are being installed. The concrete placement volume has surpassed 5 million cubic yards.
