Join AGC Houston as we recognize and celebrate excellence in safety at the Midyear Meeting Wednesday, July 15, 7-9 a.m. This year's meeting will feature keynote speaker Derek Daly, a former racing driver from Ireland who won the 1977 British Formula Three Championship, and competed as a professional racing driver for 17 years participating in 64 World Championship Formula One Grand Prix.
AGC Houston will recognize member companies that participated in the Safety Stand-Down and the AGC Safety Excellence Awards.
In addition, we will present one outstanding safety professional with the Ray Lambright Excellence in Safety Award and recognize two specialty contractor companies with the Excellence in Safety Award.
HURRY! There is is still time to nominate a safety professional and outstanding specialty contractor company.

To develop the tools needed to build lean, AGC has developed the Lean Construction Education Program (units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). Construction professionals at all experience levels learn the building blocks necessary to transform their projects and companies into a lean operating system.
This month, AGC Houston offers Unit 3 and 4.
July 7: Unit 3 - Lean Workstructuring is a half-day course that introduces an essential component of the Last Planner System, Lean Workstructuring. SOLD OUT
July 23: Unit 4 - The Last Planner System is a half-day course that delves in creating six-week look-ahead schedules and weekly work plans.

CM-BIM candidates must successfully complete the four AGC BIM Education Program courses, provide AGC with record of completion and have approved application in advance of exam.

Completion of this course meets the requirements of OSHA Paragraph 1926.50, and participants will receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid and CPR/AED wallet card valid for two years upon course completion.

This course covers the OSHA standards for the construction industry found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1926 along with other relevant policies, procedures, and safety and health principles for the construction industry. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous and most frequently cited by OSHA.

This course will provide an overview of the risk management and insurance profession from the health and safety program perspective.
|
This course covers the OSHA Fall Protection Standards for construction and general industry and current fall protection methods. Students will participate in workshops demonstrating the inspection and use of fall protection equipment, residential construction fall protection, training requirements, and developing a fall protection program.
|
This course is the update required every four years for all OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainers for General Industry. It provides timely information on OSHA General Industry standards, policies and regulations.

Construction spending climbed in May to the highest level since October 2008, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials cautioned, however, that those spending gains could be at risk unless all levels of government strengthen programs to develop the construction workforce.

Stephen Ellsworth, Vice President, Senior Qualified Plan Consultant with Robert W. Baird and Co., has been recognized by the Financial Times in its inaugural ranking of "The FT 401 (k) Top Retirement Plan Advisors."
The 2015 edition was published on May 28, 2015 and recognizes the top 401(k) Retirement Plan advisors in the United States. To receive the ranking, financial advisors are evaluated using criteria such as assets under management, compliance record, experience, and credentials. This evaluation is based on data gathered from firms and verified by broker-dealer home offices, regulatory disclosures and Financial Times research.
Stephen Ellsworth and his team have served as the financial advisors since the formations of the AGC Southwest Chapters plan in early 2010.

Gilbane Building Company announced the recent promotions of two employees in the Houston office.
Lisa Martin, Global Sales and Services Director has been named Vice President. Martin, based in Houston, currently leads Gilbane’s companywide sales and marketing efforts, as well as the innovation services group. Martin has been with Gilbane for more than 16 years and has served in various capacities, including a successful role in sales support and business development for the Southwest region. In her current role, she oversees more than 35 sales services and innovation group staff members.
Freddie T. Bustillo has been named a vice president of the company. Bustillo began his Built Environment career in 1981 working for regional general contractors and a national consulting engineering firm before joining Gilbane in 1994. With his strong Texas network, he has worked in multiple office locations within the Gilbane organization. His market sector areas of expertise include Education, General Public and Healthcare. "This is a great reflection of the more than 17 years of market leadership Freddie has had with our team. We are happy that he has embraced this opportunity," says Dan Gilbane, Regional Manager.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted a launch site license to make Ellington Airport the 10th commercial spaceport in the U.S., the Houston Airport System announced June 30. Now, HAS can turn its attention to establishing the required infrastructure and support facilities needed to accommodate reusable launch vehicles, which will launch horizontally like commercial aircraft, rather than vertically. The Howard Hughes Corporation recently broke ground on Lakeland Village Center, the first commercial development in the master planned community Bridgeland. Phase 1 (20 acres) delivers in spring 2016 and will have 84,000 square feet of mixed-use space, including retail, restaurants and professional/medical offices. The company owns, develops and manages masterplanned communities including The Woodlands and Bridgeland in the greater Houston area. Forbes magazine's May 25 issue features a story on the real estate powerhouse.

Based on its high volume of STEM jobs compared to other industries, the Bayou City ranked as one of the hottest metros for advanced industries. Ranked by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit think tank based in Washington, D.C., Houston’s deep sea engineering and technology engineering were said to reshape global energy markets and "represent quintessential advanced industry breakthroughs."

The following list contains capital projects listed in the approved 2016-17 budget by department. The projects total more than $1.3 billion and reach nearly $2 billion when added to funding reserved for the state's aging infrastructure. Funding amounts for those "deferred maintenance" projects are listed at the bottom.

About 90% of the expansion work to widen and deepen the Panama Canal has been finished as the project enters its final stage. The third set of locks is 88% complete, and 16 rolling gates have been installed. Now, more than 150 valves to control water movement are being installed. The concrete placement volume has surpassed 5 million cubic yards.
