The Awards for Project Excellence (APEX) honor firms in our industry for their excellence in constructing. This year, the process to submit entries will be handled electronically. There will be no project binders nor thumb drives to load with files and submit to AGC Houston.
Join us for a hands-on demonstration that will explain the new submittal process. The discussion is free but registration is highly recommended. APEX entries are due May 27, 2016.

There are numerous resources available to plan a toolbox talk, safety activity and training for workers. Staff from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA) attended "Building Innovation 2016," the fourth annual conference presented by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). The Institute presented two collaborative tracks to examine the efforts underway within multiple segments of the industry to address different facets of the built environment and developed coordinated strategies for resiliency.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing was honored with three National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) awards for excellent workmanship and safety, presented to them at the National Roofing Contractors Association 129th Annual Convention in Florida on February 17, 2016.
Curtis Purvis, Chamberlin Superintendent, was chosen as a Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress’ Most Valuable Player for his exceptional achievements and contributions to the roofing industry in three of their five categories: Leadership, Safety and Community Service. In addition, he was honored as Professional Roofing’s ONE "Best of the Best" MVP out of all of the entries from across the country.
Chamberlin also received NRCA’s Gold Circle Safety Award and an NRCA Gold Circle honorable mention for their work on the Dallas Love Field Modernization Project. The Gold Circle Awards program recognizes NRCA members for exceptional contributions to the roofing industry and unique roofing-related jobs. This project was recently featured in the Roofing Contractor publication.
An important aspect of Chamberlin’s quality initiative is Chamberlin University, a training and education program for their workforce. Chamberlin has graduated hundreds of craft workers and superintendents from the course and invested thousands of hours in safety, technical and soft skills training that empowers Chamberlin team members to deliver quality, cost-effective projects that are completed safely and with a spirit of cooperation.

AGC Houston President/CEO Jerry Nevlud was presented with a recognition plaque for his year of service as President of the Executive Leadership Council during the Convention in San Antonio. The ELC is the group of AGC association professionals who oversee Chapters across the country. The mission of the ELC is to provide continuous and timely professional development, networking opportunities and leadership skills through effective facilitation and strategic thinking.

The Houston Independent School District is hosting its fourth annual Career Readiness Expo on April 9 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White ESC, 4400 West 18th Street. The Construction Specifications Institute is hosting its Spring Conference April 14-16, 2016 at the Hilton Post Oak Conference Center.

Hospitals are building green, but not necessarily going for certification. That has led some companies like Hammes to pay for the cost of certification. It recently built a $147 million hospital building that achieved LEED Silver certification.

The Construction Outlook report by JLL predicts construction growth will outpace the regular economy, partially due to activity in cities like Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Chicago; and Charlotte, NC. However, rising labor costs are a concern.

Construction started five years ago on the $1.3 billion project to replace the aging State Route 520 bridge in Seattle, which will span 7,710 feet to become the world's longest floating bridge. Supported by 77 pontoons, the new bridge is nearly twice as wide as the old bridge. The project is 95% complete and should open to traffic in April.
