This new network is an alliance of Houston construction companies, associations and related businesses that have created an organization to generate safety awareness throughout all ranks of the construction industry. These like-minded partners recognize that many businesses and small contractors may not have the safety resources and support as that of larger entities.

The Construction Safety Network - Houston Chapter is assisted by OSHA and provides safety information and outreach to all companies and their workers, regardless of size, structure or affiliation.

Join the Construction Safety Network! Next Meeting: June 14, 2016 10 a.m. - noon, IEC, 600 N. Shepherd

AGC News
As previously reported by AGC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting public comment on its draft 2017 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Construction General Permit (CGP) until May 26. AGC has taken numerous actions over the past several weeks to inform the EPA staff tasked with reissuing the federal CGP of AGC’s main concerns with the agency’s proposed draft.

AGC is very concerned by EPA’s attempt to "add on" electronic SWPPP reporting—in the midst of an already insufficient 45-day comment period on the draft 2017 CGP.

More than $53 million worth of construction lobbying efforts last year tried to effect changes related to regulatory issues, tax policy and highway funding. Construction trade groups and private companies led the efforts.

"You try to make sure that the vast majority of what [legislators are] hearing is from people who are really experts in the issue," said Jeffrey Shoaf, AGC of America's Senior Executive Director for Government Relations. "They hear a lot from people who aren't necessarily experts who have a solution to a perceived problem rather than a sound solution to a demonstrated, significant problem."

Congratulations to TDIndustries on celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Founded in 1946 as Texas Distributors in Dallas, the three-person company has grown to 2,300 employees, representing one of the largest U.S. mechanical construction and facility service providers.

Serving major Texas markets and Phoenix, Arizona, the company has made Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For list,"  and it's one of only four construction companies to be listed in the raking for the past 19 years.

Graham Moore, who leads the Houston office, has been with TD since 1979. He joined TDIndustries as a senior project manager, and over the years has held the titles of Manager of Engineering & Manufacturing, Regional Manager, Vice President and Senior Vice President before being named President of TD's Houston operation in 2008.  He also oversees TD's Phoenix operation.

Hiring in the office-employment sector is strong, as is demand for space. However, many developers steer clear of speculative office buildings because construction has managed to keep pace with demand in many markets and because of construction costs and lack of available land. "We are witnessing the early and tentative stages of transition from a landlord's market to a tenant's market," said Keith DeCoster of Savills Studley.
