The Department of Labor's new overtime pay rule goes into effect Dec. 1, at which time contractors will likely be forced to reduce workers' hours and benefits, according to several trade groups, including AGC. "The Obama administration has placed yet another burden on contractors that forces them to spend even more of their limited proceeds on compliance instead of compensation," said AGC's Brian Turmail, adding that the group would "pursue legislative corrections."

News You Can Use |
In 2014, President Obama directed the Secretary of Labor to update the overtime regulations to reflect the original intent of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and to simplify and modernize the rules so they’re easier for workers and businesses to understand and apply. The department has issued a final rule that will put more money in the pockets of middle class workers – or give them more free time.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration today issued a final rule to modernize injury data collection to better inform workers, employers, the public and OSHA about workplace hazards. With this new rule, OSHA is applying the insights of behavioral economics to improve workplace safety and prevent injuries and illnesses.
AGC Houston member Tony Stergio, Andrews Myers, PC writes about the effect these new regulations will have on employees and employers.

Provisions call for employers to electronically submit injury and illness data that they already record.
The new rule, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2017, requires certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness data that they are already required to record on their onsite OSHA Injury and Illness forms.

With the final votes tallied, four candidates backed by AGC Texas Building Branch emerged victorious from the May 24 runoff elections in the Texas Legislature and now head to the general election in November.
Those winners—three House candidates and a Senate candidate—have now secured their places on the November 8, 2016 general election ballot after falling short of the votes needed to win in the March primaries.
The AGC-backed winners include: Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) in Senate District 1; Justin Holland (R-Heath) in House District 33; Lynn Stucky (R-Sanger) in House District 64; and Barbara Gervin-Hawkins (D-San Antonio) in House District 120.

Precision and predictability are harbingers of a successful construction project. The failure to adhere to specifications or customer preferences can have serious consequences on the integrity, safety or profitability of a project. While not every aspect of a build can be reduced to a blueprint, general contractors know that their ability to minimize and adapt to the unknowns—including unexpected labor issues—often makes the difference. A recent decision of the National Labor Relations Board won’t make those tasks any easier.
