The Associated General Contractors of America and its Texas chapters launched a new campaign on January 25, 2017 designed to highlight the many benefits of working in the construction industry. The new campaign, called Texas Builds, relies on testimonials from dozens of construction workers throughout Texas to highlight the industry's commitment to safety and the many career opportunities that exist in the sector.

Construction employment increased by 36,000 jobs in January to the highest level since November 2008 as employers increased pay in an effort to address a chronic worker shortage, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. The association urged public officials to strengthen training and education programs to prepare more workers for careers in the high-paying construction field.

Linbeck Group, LLC, recently completed the T. Boone Pickens Hospice and Palliative Care Center and Hamon Resource and Education Center. Located in Dallas. The state-of-the-art facility is owned and operated by Presbyterian Communities and Services and named for business magnate and financier, T. Boone Pickens. It is the first campus of its kind. For an approximate construction cost of $23 million, Linbeck erected two buildings totaling 77,500 square feet on a 9.2-acre property where PCS will offer a comprehensive approach to end-of-life care with five "Centers of Excellence Care," including the Inpatient Care Center, Child and Family Bereavement Center, Resource and Education Center, Spiritual Care Center, and Outdoor Reflection Center. Starting February 14, 2017 and every second Tuesday of the month, the Wage and Hour Division in Houston will be conducting in-person compliance assistance focused on raising awareness about compliance with federal labor laws in the construction industry. This initiative is part of a larger effort to connect employers with the information they need to better understand their responsibilities under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Davis Bacon and Related Acts (DBRA) and other Wage and Hour laws.

On January 25, 2017, 90 U.S. congressmen wrote to President Trump about the final OSHA ruling on Crystalline Silica and its negative impact on businesses. The letter cited that the construction industry estimates it would cost nearly $5 billion per year to comply with the ruling and that other industries such as natural gas, aggregates, foundries, brick manufacturers, maritime and others would suffer.

The Environmental Protection Agency's 2017 construction general permit, taking effect February 16, 2017, will make site operators jointly and severally liable for infractions. Several industry groups oppose the provision.

In August 2016, the Houston Business Journal launched Crane Watch, an interactive map with details of major construction projects currently underway in the Houston area. Project categories include education, hotel, industrial, medical, mixed-use, office, residential, retail and other. In addition to the project’s location, each description includes size, developer and/or owner, estimated completion date and other aspects. Companies are encouraged to add data to the map.
