AGC-TBB Bills On Construction Defects & Right To Cure Pass Out Of Committee; Senate Passes Budget Plan

The House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee passed two pieces of legislation touted by AGC Texas Building Branch that are key to reforming the construction industry in Texas.

The two measures - House Bill 1734 and House Bill 1999 - address issues arising in lawsuits alleging construction defects in government projects, especially school districts.

The 2020-21 $248 billion budget would spend roughly the same as the House proposal that passed and the two chambers have agreed to spend $9 billion on public education, including $2.7 billion on property tax reform.

AGC of America Workforce Development Scholarship Applications Due June 1

The Education and Research Foundation offers Workforce Development Scholarships to students enrolled in accredited technical schools or craft training programs in any discipline of commercial construction. Students in technical or approved craft training programs will have until June 1, 2019, to apply for $1,000 scholarships (renewal for up to two years).

Repairing Homes, Building Bonds At Heart Of CLC Service Day Mission

It has been more than a year and a half since Hurricane Harvey soaked the Greater Houston area. Thankfully, for a majority in the region the angst and disruption it caused in our lives remains only as an unsettling memory. But for a significant number of individuals and families, their homes continue to be a daily reminder of the storm that is on record as the wettest storm ever in the United States.

It is for that purpose, that for the second year in a row the AGC Houston Construction Leadership Council (CLC) teamed with the Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) organization for its Annual Day of Service. More than 30 individuals from AGC member companies, along with members of the AGC staff, volunteered on Saturday April 6th to help repair a Harvey-ravaged home in the South Union area of Houston.

On behalf of the entire AGC Houston organization, I want to thank everyone who spent the major part of their Saturday correcting something that most of us take for granted: living in a home that is both safe and sound.

DOL Proposes Update To Regular Rate Of Pay Regulations

On March 28, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division unveiled a proposed rule that would update the regulations governing regular rate requirements for the first time in more than 50 years. The proposed rule focuses primarily on clarifying whether certain kinds of perks, benefits, or other miscellaneous items must be included in the regular rate.

AGC will provide input to the DOL on the impact this update might have on the construction industry and will notify members of any developments.
