About 200 members of the Rice Design Alliance gathered for the 2015 Annual Membership Meeting and Reception on Wednesday, June 10, at Kirksey-designed LEED Platinum Certified 3009 Post Oak Boulevard in Uptown Houston. The event also served to elect new directors to the board and introduce officers for 2015-2016. AGC Houston was honored with an award to mark its 25 years of corporate sponsorship. Rice University will soon break ground on a $2 million sports facility, the latest such project in Houston. The project will include a grandstand, enclosed press box and team facilities for soccer, track and field, and cross country. The grandstand will use a mixture of chair-back and bleacher seating to accommodate 1,500 people. Houston-based Jackson & Ryan Architects will design the grandstand, which will replace a nearly 50-year-old facility. Information about a general contractor was not immediately available.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on May 27 completed and released a new and final rule on the water features over which they will claim jurisdiction. The new rule is the culmination of their long and controversial effort to align federal regulations with the latest U.S. Supreme Court decisions and simultaneously make permitting decisions easier.

Construction firms added jobs in 40 states and the District of Columbia between April 2014 and April 2015 and in 30 states and D.C. between March and April, according to an analysis of Labor Department data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said that even as construction employment continues to expand, workforce shortages and infrastructure funding challenges threaten future growth.
