AGC Houston Now Accepting Applications For Leadership AGC Class Of 2017
In 2015, AGC Houston launched an immersive development program that helps participants become transformative leaders. To date, close to 30 individuals—earmarked by their companies as up-and-coming leaders—have taken the interactive course. During the eight-month program, participants gain a better understanding of the responsibilities and qualities that leaders need to successfully shape AGC and the Houston commercial construction industry. Heat Illness Can Be Deadly The body normally cools itself by sweating. During hot weather, especially with high humidity, sweating isn't enough. Body temperature can rise to dangerous levels if you don't drink enough water and rest in the shade. You can suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In 2014 alone, 2,630 workers suffered from heat illness and 18 died from heat stroke and related causes on the job. Heat illnesses and deaths are preventable. Under OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing workplaces free of known safety hazards. This includes protecting workers from extreme heat. An employer with workers exposed to high temperatures should establish a complete heat illness prevention program.

On June 21, 2016, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finalized a new and comprehensive set of rules for the commercial use of small drones in all industries, including construction.
AGC of America submitted detailed comments on the proposed rules and continues to assess the FAA’s response. At the outset of its letter to the agency, AGC encouraged the FAA "to create a straightforward and streamlined process for companies to request exemptions from the agency’s [proposed] requirements and restrictions" where alternative approaches to "specific aircraft operations" would be "equally effective" in addressing the agency’s concerns.

On June 15, 2016, AGC of America and seven other trade associations jointly filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in the Browning-Ferris Industries case concerning the definition of "joint employer" under the National Labor Relations Act. The brief supports Browning-Ferris Industries’ appeal of the August 2015 National Labor Relations Board decision (link is external) expanding that definition.

Thirty-nine states added construction jobs between May 2015 and May 2016 while construction employment only increased in 19 states between April and May, according to analysis of Labor Department data released June 17 by Associated General Contractors of America.
"With construction demand remaining high and construction unemployment getting lower, the slowdown in monthly hiring probably has a lot more to do with a lack of workers than it does a lack of work," said Ken Simonson, Chief Economist for the association. "Overall the construction market appears robust and as long as most firms can find qualified workers."

The redevelopment of the campus replaces the original 1979 building, representing a new 80,000 square-foot-facility scheduled for completion in late 2019. The school, along with a new 164,000 square-foot exhibition hall, the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building for modern and contemporary art, will link to two existing gallery buildings and the sculpture garden to create a 14-acre public campus. Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the new, L-shaped structure will define two edges of the new Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza. With an entrance fronting onto the plaza, the school’s roofline will extend downward to a stepped amphitheater with outdoor space for programs and performances, and upward to the walkable, trellised BBVA Compass Roof Garden, which will provide dramatic views of the campus. OSHA recently issued a rule that requires employers to 1) inform employees of their right to report work-related injuries and illnesses free from retaliation, and 2) provide that procedures for reporting work-related injuries and illnesses are reasonable and don’t deter or discourage employees from reporting. The anti-retaliation provisions, which go into effect on August 10, 2016, potentially have far-reaching implications for AGC members. In addition, OSHA finalized new electronic employment rules which will require all employers with 250 or more employees, and employers with 20 or more employees in the construction industry, to electronically submit information from their 2016 Form 300A to OSHA by July 1, 2017.
