Monthly District Spotlight: Featuring District 3
District 3 includes Ocala Human Resource Management Association (OHRMA), North Central Florida SHRM (NCF-SHRM), and SHRM Jacksonville. I am proud to say that all three Chapters are 2019 SHRM Excel Award Winners. Each chapter quickly pivoted to a virtual environment and have been able to continue to support their membership during these difficult times.
OHRMA, in the face of the COVID pandemic, shifted to conference calls for board meetings and Zoom chapter meetings. According to Marcy Delk, SHRM-CP, PHR, OHRMA Chapter President, one of their favorite virtual programs was “The FFCRA and Workplace Challenges in a Pandemic” from HR Florida President-Elect, Chad Sorenson, SHRM-SCP, SPHR. They also partnered with CEP to certify a Tony Robbins program, “Peak Performance in Challenging Times.”
OHRMA received a Silver Excel award from SHRM for the following initiatives. They held a recruiting event that featured free head shots to everyone that attended. Additionally, they partnered with the College of Central Florida to introduce students to the many local career opportunities to help them choose to stay in the area after graduation. Some of their plans have been delayed, but they are focusing on their chapter members and looking to the future, when they can safely be back together. NCF-SHRM, located in Gainesville, describe themselves as “small but mighty.” It is difficult to believe, but in the middle of a global pandemic they have increased membership by over 30 percent. Much of this was accomplished the old- fashioned way, by reaching out to their membership and reminding them what the chapter had to offer. They held a networking event in February, and then the world changed. Naturally, they had to take a step back and reevaluate how to maintain contact with their members and keep them engaged. They continued to offer outstanding programming, and increased chapter communications when they went to virtual meetings. Since March, they have offered at least one program a month and in June offered two. Each offered recertification credits. Kelly George, SHRM-CP, PHR, Chapter President, wanted to highlight two presentations – March “Putting the Brakes on the Revolving Door – Why Retention Matters and Getting Your Managers on Board by Chad Sorenson, and May, “Navigating Unconscious Bias” by Dr. Mary Lee Cunhill. Their chapter found them engaging and enlightening.
NCF-SHRM received a Platinum Excel award from SHRM. One of their highlighted initiatives was a half day conference on wellness. They partnered with their local Chamber of Commerce on this event that focused on financial, mental and health wellness. They also partnered with their local Career Source Center, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and local veterans to provide assistance to job seekers. They held an educational seminar at their local Career Source geared toward Employers and Recruiting talent.
Annually, the NCF-SHRM chapter organizes a half day conference for their members and anyone who would like to participate. It is their intention to continue this tradition again this year. It is tentatively scheduled to be held in November 2020. More details to come later so please visit their webpage https://ncfshrm.org for more information.

SHRM Jacksonville - With almost 65 years of serving the HR community, the world may have changed but SHRM Jacksonville will always be here. As one of the largest SHRM chapters in the state of Florida, SHRM Jacksonville continues to be a resource to the HR Community. Although the world has changed, SHRM Jacksonville's PURPOSE - our mission, vision and strategic focus - remain the same. SHRM Jacksonville started 2020 by rolling out its 2020-25 Strategic Plan with a strategic focus on chapter programming, membership, marketing, partnerships, and volunteers.
Chapter Programming: To date, SHRM Jacksonville has held four (4) Chapter Meetings (including virtual). As a result of COVID-19, they offered eight (8) additional virtual events totaling 12 events between January and June providing 12 SHRM & HRCI recertification credits. These events also include two (2) FREE Race Relations virtual events for SHRM Chapters in FL, SE GA, and KY. Because of the increased need to host virtual events, SHRM Jacksonville will continue to provide online events a minimum of once per month at a nominal cost. A portion of the registration will go to the SHRM Foundation.
March Chapter Meeting (3/5/2020). L to R: Ana Grogan, SHRM-CP (Workforce Readiness Director), and Heather Cosgrove, SHRM-SCP, SPHR (President-Elect)
Membership: With the onset of COVID-19 and the Coronavirus, the SHRM Jacksonville Board of Directors called all active members as wellness checks and sent a survey to non-active members. Based on this membership outreach, the Mind + Body + Soul virtual series was created. Those who attended the live sessions received both SHRM & HRCI recertification credits. The series can be found on the Chapter’s YouTube Channel. In an effort to recognize the hard work that HR Professionals are doing for COVID-19 and efforts to achieve racial equality, the Chapter implemented the #HRHero social media recognition. The College Relations CLA hosted an Employer Site Tour for HR Students at Pilot Pen Corporation. They also partnered with CareerSource of NE FL to provide a panel discussion event entitled The Next Level: From Student to Professional. The Chapter continues to provide support across our four (4) student chapters to include providing speakers, being speakers and marketing assistance. They continue to engage their new members with New Member Virtual Orientations and Mixers. This summer, Emerging Professionals will be rolling out a virtual movie club.
Marketing – They are proud to announce that their SHRM Jacksonville Commercial was released on Facebook and Instagram to showcase their award-winning chapter! In response to social unrest and racial injustice, SHRM Jacksonville partnered with various FL SHRM Chapters to release a chapter statement with valuable diversity, equity and inclusion resources that were shared with their SHRM community. SHRM Jacksonville was well represented when Chapter President, Natasha Slaughter, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, was interviewed in a First Coast News article discussing the importance of senior leaders partnering with HR. In the area of Certification, SHRM Jacksonville has supported three (3) certification preparation courses that were offered with our local college/university partners during spring and summer. In September, they will support two (2) additional both certification preparation courses. Lastly, they have implemented various ways to support the SHRM Foundation including their current fundraiser - Face Masks for sale with the net proceeds benefitting the SHRM Foundation.
Partnerships: In February, they implemented an Annual Non-Profit Spotlight and selected the non-profit organization, Onward to Opportunity. The non-profit will be featured at all in-person Chapter Meetings and their program participants will be featured in their marketing communications to their SHRM Community. In February, their Diversity CLA established a marketing partnership with the National Diversity Council. Also, SHRM Jacksonville held a partnership chapter meeting with the North Florida PRSA on March 5. They have seen an increase in the number of companies that are eager to partner and support SHRM Jacksonville including Jackson Lewis offering COVID-19 webinars and DCSI offering Race Relations online events specifically for their members. Starting this summer, the Workforce Readiness Committee will begin a partnership with Jacksonville Urban League to implement a workforce readiness/in-transition online series.
Volunteers: Their Board of Directors and volunteers continue to support the community despite being quarantined and social distancing. Volunteers led Facebook Live events to support military members transitioning to civilian workforce, being speakers and panelist at Student Chapter virtual events and establishing partnerships with community leaders. They have seen an increase in requests from their SHRM community to volunteer with their chapter! This support will be reflected in the upcoming events and initiatives throughout the remainder of year. They will be hosting a Volunteer Virtual Open House and Board Information Sessions for those interested in joining the board.
SHRM Jacksonville will round out the remainder of the year with these upcoming events. Please note, they will be closely monitoring COVID-19 and will adjust programming accordingly.
