HR Florida State Council Honored with Platinum Excellence Award For Elevating Human Resources, Improving Workplaces!
The Excel award is SHRM’s top honor, recognizing outstanding achievements in state council operations and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services to HR professionals. This marks the second consecutive year the Council has received this outstanding recognition!
HR Florida’s submission highlighted four successful initiatives, including its commitment to increase local chapter membership by 5.4% within a year and to raise awareness of mental illness among its chapter membership and workplaces by partnering with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Additionally, in an effort to better capture individualized chapter performance data, the district directors team created a centralized data dashboard, which allowed for more strategic planning and chapter guidance. Lastly, the Council reformatted its leadership conference, holding two conferences within 2019 to enhance both attendance rates and conference value.
Along with HR Florida’s notable win, 16 local chapters also earned Excel Awards for 2019, highlighting the organization’s commitment to HR excellence. SHRM Jacksonville, HR Tampa, Greater Pensacola Chapter of SHRM, Sarasota Manatee HRA, North Central Florida SHRM, SHRM SWFL, Big Bend SHRM, Bay County SHRM, St. Lucie County HR Assn., SHRM Volusia/Flagler Chapter and Florida Keys SHRM all won Platinum awards; SHRM/Emerald Coast Chapter and Charlotte County SHRM were granted Gold Excel Awards; Mid-Florida SHRM and Ocala HR Management Assn. earned Silver Excel awards and Greater Orlando SHRM was also recognized with a Bronze Excel Award.

This annual award recognizes a human resource leader who has advanced the profession in a significant way. “Best in class,” the individuals nominated for this award serve as role models for the profession by setting the standard for others to follow and apply their expertise to enhance organizational effectiveness.

In December 2019, we shared a challenge to join SHRM’s A-Team. In true HR Florida fashion – we won! As promised, the $500 Amazon gift card furnished by Emily Dickens, Corporate Secretary, Chief of Staff and Head, Government Affairs at SHRM, will be used in our fundraising efforts for the SHRM Foundation. Thank you for sharing the A-Team information with your chapters and colleagues, joining, and getting involved!
If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to sign up for the A-Team. SHRM’s Member Advocacy team will be sending out periodic emails with your state’s position in the standings and we are looking forward to a competitive race that will conclude at year’s end.

In the spirit of continued competition…SHRM presents a new challenge for 2020:
SHRM’s A-Team is growing and aims to have more than 20,000 members by the end of 2021. Though it is important we educate members on workplace policy through A-Team participation, it’s also important that we give members the skills, training, and resources needed to effectively advocate for solid workplace policy and sound strategy within their organizations. Realizing that this type of professional development is core to the work of HR professionals, we developed Advocacy@Work.
Advocacy@Work is a brand new, two-day immersive training and practical experience for attendees to learn how to use their voice to change workplace public policy at the national, state, and local levels. It provides attendees the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and learn how advocacy can make an impact on both policy and within your workplace. This event will not only provide members insight into workplace public policy, but also how to use persuasive storytelling to impact change in their organizations.
If you have any questions regarding the A-Team or Advocacy@Work, please reach out to Bailey Yeager at bailey.yeager@shrm.org.

In any situation where employee safety is at risk, HR becomes the nucleus of any organization in mobilizing processes to ensure the safety of employees and business continuity. Workplace issues surrounding COVID-19 created a sudden pop-quiz to many HR departments, testing their processes and highlighting their agility and ability to take decisive actions to navigate these uncharted waters.
Luckily, due to the times that we live in, with all the remote collaborative technological applications (geared to all types of business environments, from small to enterprise size), it is easier for us to achieve these goals. It is therefore critical that once HR leaders put together committees to expedite decision-making on safety issues, that their next focus is to closely partner with business leaders to understand their needs of successfully managing their people remotely. Also, to partner closely with IT to make sure that they are providing them with those tools. HR, therefore, becomes the fulfillment center in a way, translating these needs and works to expedite execution.
