This pandemic has changed the landscape for all professionals and as we navigate through these challenges, HR Florida wants to be there for you and your certification needs. Are you studying for or thinking about taking a SHRM Certification Exam (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)?  If so, we are providing some options to help maximize your learnings and prepare you for your certification. Here is the upcoming winter testing window information.
Given the current situation, the 2020 Student Case Competition will take place virtually, utilizing Zoom.  Presentations are to be pre-recorded, and judges will view and critique the presentations during the HR Florida Leadership Conference on October 23 & 24.

Employee engagement is your employees’ ability and willingness to contribute to organizational success, especially their willingness to give “discretionary effort” – going beyond what is typically required in their position to make the organization successful. The coronavirus pandemic has made it clear some factors are out of an organization’s control. So, it’s more important than ever to focus on something they can: creating a culture of engagement.

Leadership has always been at the forefront of management training. However, the four functions of management depict leadership as one of the four. For instance, Henri Fayol has been posited as the forefather of the functions of management. While he had more than four in his original publication in France which was translated to English in the 1930s. The four that seemed to stand the test of time are controlling, leading, planning, and organizing.

In December 2019, we shared a challenge to join SHRM’s A-Team. In true HR Florida fashion – we won! As promised, the $500 Amazon gift card furnished by Emily Dickens, Corporate Secretary, Chief of Staff and Head, Government Affairs at SHRM, will be used in our fundraising efforts for the SHRM Foundation. Thank you for sharing the A-Team information with your chapters and colleagues, joining, and getting involved!

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to sign up for the A-Team. SHRM’s Member Advocacy team will be sending out periodic emails with your state’s position in the standings and we are looking forward to a competitive race that will conclude at year’s end.
In the spirit of continued competition…SHRM presents a new challenge for 2020:

SHRM’s A-Team is growing and aims to have more than 20,000 members by the end of 2021. Though it is important we educate members on workplace policy through A-Team participation, it’s also important that we give members the skills, training, and resources needed to effectively advocate for solid workplace policy and sound strategy within their organizations. Realizing that this type of professional development is core to the work of HR professionals, we developed Advocacy@Work.

Advocacy@Work is a brand new, two-day immersive training and practical experience for attendees to learn how to use their voice to change workplace public policy at the national, state, and local levels. It provides attendees the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and learn how advocacy can make an impact on both policy and within your workplace. This event will not only provide members insight into workplace public policy, but also how to use persuasive storytelling to impact change in their organizations.

If you have any questions regarding the A-Team or Advocacy@Work, please reach out to Bailey Yeager at bailey.yeager@shrm.org.

SHRM just announced the winners of the Student Chapter Merit Awards for 2019-20, and there were 4 Florida student chapters recognized.

Each year, SHRM presents the SHRM Student Chapter Award to recognize student chapter achievements. To be eligible, student chapters must meet all the chapter affiliation requirements and complete various activities.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded a 2019-2020 Outstanding Award designation to the Florida Tech SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members. The SHRM Outstanding Student Chapter Award recognizes chapters for specific projects and activities that distinguish them from other chapters. This designation was awarded to only 12 student chapters out of approximately 500 nationwide.
In order for chapters to remain SHRM Recertification Providers, the point of contact for the SHRM Provider program must submit the annual Reaffirmation. Please contact the SHRM Recertification Provider team at 703-535-6250.
