Brazil’s largest economic newspaper, Valor Economico, published an op-ed by IIE’s President and CEO Allan E. Goodman on strengthening ties between the U.S. and Brazil through higher education. Goodman noted a number of programs and initiatives that already have been enacted to fulfill President Dilma Rousseff’s goal of providing 75,000 study abroad scholarships to Brazilian students through 2014 in order to prepare Brazil’s young people to thrive in the knowledge economy. Goodman applauds the goal as an example of "brain circulation," where researchers and highly skilled workers cross borders several times in the course of their careers, creating a long-term net gain for all parties involved. As Goodman states, "The easier we make it for [students and workers] to do this, the more the world stands to gain from the international connections and networks they create."
