The Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, are dedicated to increasing international scholarly opportunities for faculty and international experiences for students. With the opening of the Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs office and the appointment of the first Vice President for International and Global Affairs, Rutgers is committed to opening the world to Rutgers students and faculty.
Rutgers University Study Abroad (RUSA) is one of the units comprising the Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs. Rutgers is initiating a national search for the next Director of Rutgers University Study Abroad office. RUSA deploys undergraduate education programs overseas for all of the three campuses comprising Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden). With over 100 long-term programs in over 40 countries and an additional 25 summer faculty-led programs, RUSA directly enrolls nearly 800 students annually. The functions of the RUSA office resemble those of an undergraduate college including recruitment, admission, retention, academic support, teaching, health and safety, risk management, assessment, and student life services such as housing, counseling, and recreation. RUSA operations have a high level of liability and as such liaises regularly with University Risk Management and General Counsel. RUSA, as part of the Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs, is committed to the internationalization of Rutgers and has been and will continue to increase the number and type of programs offered.
The Director, RUSA, reports to the Vice President for International and Global Affairs and oversees the fundamental administrative and financial operations of the RUSA office and its programs in all critical aspects. The Director serves as the primary executive in implementation of program policies and strategic planning for program development. The Director directly supervises six full-time staff employees, five program resident directors, and part-time and student employees. The Director oversees the annual cycle of administration services for over 1,000 applicants, 800 current students, and over 800 returning students in over 100 overseas long programs and twenty-five summer programs. The Director has primary financial responsibility for RUSA programs and activities, and monitors risk management issues for all running programs.
The successful candidate will have five years progressively responsible experience working in international education and advising U.S. students studying abroad. A Ph.D. in a field connected with international education is preferred. Fluency in a second language and experience living or working abroad is preferred. The successful candidate must be able to travel internationally and work some nights and weekends. The capacity for critical, independent judgment and ability to interact effectively and professionally with faculty are essential.
