Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program: Opportunities in South and Central Asia

South and Central Asia is a dynamic, rich, and diverse region balancing a respect for traditions with increasing engagement in an interconnected world. It is a region which ranges from the vast steppes and rugged mountains of Central Asia to the deserts and tropics of South Asia. It is attractive for Americans because of its history, religious, cultural and geographic variety.

Central Asia provides Fulbright Scholars with multiple country locations in which grant activities can be conducted: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Here, in the heart of Asia, Fulbrighters can experience the development of emerging sectors including education and information sciences, among others. All disciplines will be considered for awards in Central Asia, which can provide vast opportunities for individuals in an array of fields. Awards are open to professionals and non-Ph.D. holders. As there are a limited number of U.S. scholars in Central Asia, motivated scholars have an opportunity to make a significant impact in these emerging countries.

As a result of a recent agreement between the governments of the United States and India, the Fulbright awards in India are titled Fulbright-Nehru awards. India offers more Fulbright U.S. Scholar program opportunities than any other country in the world, with more than 70 Fulbright-Nehru grants for U.S. scholars, professionals, and international education administrators.

Beyond India, opportunities abound in South Asia for Fulbright activities. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka provide the setting for a broad range of projects.
