In this photo from IIE’s 1995 Annual Report, Nyanga Tshabalala shares a smile with the "Sesame Street" character Elmo. Nyanga was one of six South Africans who in 1995, one year after the end of apartheid, spent six-month affiliations with Children's Television Workshop. They studied multimedia educational programming for preschoolers with a view to adapting "Sesame Street" for South Africa. The IIE-administered fellowships were funded by the Ford Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
