The Institute of International Education is joining with the University of York and the Brookings Doha Center on July 17 to convene university and policy leaders to declare a commitment to protect and rebuild higher education caught in the crossfire of armed conflict. The "York Accord" workshop will address the pressing need for creative thinking on how best to respond to the challenges higher education faces in conflict-affected countries and what is the best way to contribute towards recovery and transition. Key participants include Former President of Portugal and laureate of the first UN Nelson Mandela Prize, Jorge Sampaio, Professor Sultan Barakat, Director of Research at the Brookings Doha Center, and Dr. Allan Goodman, president of IIE. Other academics from around the world who will take part include Professor Joseph Isaac, President of the African Methodist Episcopal University, Liberia, and Habibullah Habib, the President of Kabul University.
During the University of York graduation ceremony on July 16, Allan Goodman will receive an honorary degree, recognizing his contributions to higher education and his leadership of the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund.
Roughly
15 months after IIE launched the Generation Study Abroad® initiative, it’s time
to take stock. Are we making progress? Can we achieve our goal of doubling
study abroad by the end of the decade? With nearly 650 commitment partners
pledging tangible actions to increase study abroad participation, IIE’s Daniel
Obst takes a look at what this means for the future of study abroad in the
United States.

The Institute of International Education is seeking motivated, qualified international education professionals to provide one year of mentorship to counterparts at universities in Myanmar through the IIE Connecting with the World course. Piloted from 2013-2014, this hybrid distance course provides higher education professionals in Myanmar with training on how to develop and manage an international office. In the 2015 – 2016 cycle, IIE is offering a Level 1 Basic course and Level 2 Intermediate course. Mentors will be paired with one or two course participants from either of the course levels, providing weekly guidance on assignments and other course material.
Communication is mainly performed via e-mail and Skype. Past mentors have been critical to the success of the course by providing helpful guidance to colleagues in Myanmar who have a keen interest in internationalizing their campuses, and acting as a link for fostering closer ties between their home institutions and their mentees’ institutions. Mentorship lasts from October 2015 – October 2016 and is estimated to take approximately 1-2 hours per week.
Interested professionals should complete an application and email it to Charles von Rosenberg (CVonRosenberg@iie.org) by August 7th. To download the application and access more information, please visit the IIE Myanmar Higher Education site.
