ILTA, the American Chemistry Council and the American Fuels & Petrochemical Marketers jointly hosted a free webinar on October 21 to help companies prepare for the upcoming TWIC-reader rule security requirements. The Coast Guard recently finalized the TWIC reader rule, establishing a compliance deadline of May 8, 2023. Steve Roberts from Roberts Law Group/Chemical Security Group and Rear Admiral (Ret.) Roy Nash presented a five-hour webinar to 70 attendees. Although the rule does not go into effect until 2023, companies need to plan, budget and execute programs to comply with the new rules. Without adequate preparation, the impacts could be enormous. The Department of Homeland Security projects an average facility would pay $600,000 to implement TWIC reader requirements, while larger facilities can expect to spend as much as $2 million. Stay tuned for more TWIC reader workshops in 2021.
