Total construction starts rose 3% from April to May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $595.1 billion, following a 25% decline the previous month. Several large nonresidential building projects broke ground in May resulting in the gain. Removing those large projects from the statistics would have resulted in no change in starts over the month. In May, nonresidential buildings increased 8%, while residential building starts rose 4%. Nonbuilding starts, however, declined 4% during the month.

Pure Gold Mining hopes to add some longevity to its new Red Lake mine, currently under construction, with an extensive exploration program this year. The Vancouver company has kicked off a more than 30,000-metre diamond drilling campaign to fill in the gaps of its mine plan, build gold reserves, and expand some new discoveries on its property.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced that it had approved GCC Energy’s lease for its expansion of the King II coal mine near Durango, Co. The Durango Herald reported that the lease is for a 981-ha (2,426-acre) expansion for the mine about 32 km (20 miles) west of Durango and is estimated to contain about 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st) of recoverable coal.
 
Barrick Gold said on Tuesday it sold a partial stake in Shandong Gold Mining for $210 million, profiting off a rise in share price of the Chinese gold miner. Gold stocks have been steadily rising since the coronavirus outbreak battered equity markets across the globe and sent investors scurrying for safe-haven assets.
 
On June 1, 2020, a contract truck driver died after falling from the top of his trailer. The victim received first aid/CPR at the scene and passed away after being transported to a local hospital. This is the 8th fatality reported in 2020, and the third classified as “Slip or Fall of Person.”
