Dr. Calvin J. Konya, PHD
June 23, 1943 - November 28, 2021
Dr. Calvin Konya was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 23, 1943 and as a child enjoyed spending time on his Grandparents farm and playing basketball as a four-year varsity athlete for the West Geauga High School, located in Chesterland, Ohio. After high school, Dr. Konya attended the Missouri School of Mines (now The Missouri University of Science and Technology). He completed numerous degrees at the University including a Bachelor's in Mining Engineering, a Masters in Mining Engineering, a Masters in Engineering Management as part of the first class of the newly formed program, and a PhD in Mining Engineering. During his coursework his major research included the development of blasthole spacing methods based on stiffness ratio - which is now used throughout the world for the basis of blasthole spacing design, development of hypersonic conical shaped charges, use of conical shaped charges for development of drill holes for blasting on the moon and mars - the first research project by NASA ever completed to analyze blasting on other planets, and liquefaction and purification of coal. During college, Dr. Konya worked as a waiter at Zeno's Restaurant in Rolla, MO, farmed large plots of grapes to sell to local wineries, and tended to a large assortment of bees to sell honey at local markets.

Show off your marksmanship skills while helping a good cause during the 19th Annual ISEE Clay Shoot on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022. Located at the Pro Gun Club, 12801 Old U.S. 95, Boulder City, NV 89005, the clay shoot includes 100 targets. Bus transportation from Paris Las Vegas hotel departs at 10:45 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Raffle tickets for $1000 Kabela’s gift card sold on the bus Ammo and lunch will be provided to each pre-registered shooter. Registration for the shoot is $150 per shooter. Eye protection is required and ear protection will be provided. Bring your own shotgun or loaner shotguns will be available for rent, renting is the best option for those registered. Proceeds from the clay shoot benefit the SEE Education Foundation Children’s Fund, which helps families of those killed or injured in commercial explosives accidents.
Caesars Entertainment Firearm Policy
Hotel and casino premises are private property. Guests and visitors of the property, who lawfully are permitted to possess a firearm or weapon, may bring such onto hotel premises only for storage purposes by the Security Department. Caesars Entertainment requires guests or vendors to notify in advance the hotel security department before coming on to the property with a firearm, and allow ample time for the security department to respond and assist in securing the firearm or weapon for the guest or vendor. Caesars Entertainment reserves the right to refuse acceptance of a firearm or weapon into storage and or deny this service at the property’s discretion.
A guest or visitor who is in possession of a firearm or weapon on hotel premises is personally responsible for abiding by all applicable federal, state and local laws with respect to firearms and weapons, in the jurisdiction where the hotel and casino is located and ensuring that the firearm is: - Unloaded - Secured in either a locked, hard sided firearm container or a soft gun case provided by the guest or vendor and is clearly labeled with their name and contact information - Securely safeguarded at all times by the guest or vendor until custody is transferred to the security department for the purposes of storing the item until departure from property.

ISEE is committed to following the guidance of the CDC, state and local authorities, as well as the Las Vegas Paris Hotel regarding the latest health and safety best practices, and we will continue to monitor and adjust our plans and health protocols as necessary.
A few of the safety protocols you can expect at ISEE’s 48th Annual Conference and Explosive Blasting Technique include:
- Accessible hand washing and/or sanitizing stations. - Regular updates to our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and attendees on the latest guidance from the CDC, Federal, State, and Local government agencies regarding mask requirements and social distancing. - Employee training to follow preventative measures and reporting. - Regular use of effective and approved disinfectants and delivery systems in the meeting rooms, exhibit hall, exhibit booths, registration table, welcome bags, and general gathering areas. - A rapid response notification and protocol system developed in conjunction with the Las Vegas Paris Hotel.

Traveling to the U.S.?
All international travelers must show proof of full vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding their flights to the U.S. Attendees traveling by land do not need to provide a negative test. For purposes of entry into the United States, vaccines accepted will include FDA approved or authorized and WHO Emergency Use Listing vaccines. Existing visa policies remain in place. The Blasters R Us Video Roundup is live! We’re accepting your 5 - 7 minute videos of projects you have worked on this past year. If you plan to submit any videos click the link to download the release form that needs to be filled out before any videos are submitted.
The video round up will be Sunday Jan. 30 during the conference. Its a 1.5 hour long video, including breaks and raffles, meant to mimic the movies. There will be popcorn and beverages for attendees. The video will be a montage of 5-7 minute videos submitted by members that showcase the work they are doing out in the field.
Email the release form to Harness@isee.org and there will be a response with detailed instructions on how to submit your video.

There's still time for the photo contest!
The deadline has been extended. So get your amazing pictures submitted or take some new ones. All qualifying photos submitted by December 31 will have a chance to win free registration to the 2023 conference.
Photos will be displayed for a panel of judges to pick the Best of Show winner at the 48th Annual Conference in Las Vegas. Winners will be announced at the conference in January, on social media and in the Journal of Explosives Engineering.
