Curious about what sets the Seismograph Section apart? Dive into their recent work and upcoming goals.
In 2024, the seismograph section is diving into a groundbreaking joint EFEE/ISEE study, comparing international blasting standards. Beyond deploying seismographs, their studies now include global wall strains, climatological crack responses, and localized strain measurements.
The integration of seismographs and vibration measurements during ISEE's 49th Annual Conference was a hit, showcasing the impact on both vibration consultants and blasters. As ISEE gears up for membership renewal, we invite those actively involved in seismographs to join the seismograph section.
Looking ahead, the section is excited about advancing their education programs, introducing higher-level data analyses to guide blasters and blast consultants from 2025 onwards. The ISEE Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs (2022 ed.) and the ISEE Field Practice Guidelines for Blasting Seismographs (2020 ed.), continue to shape industry standards with input from section members.
While they officially meet at the annual ISEE conference, the heartbeat of their section continues to echo. Study groups collaborate throughout the year and at ISEE chapter meetings. Email Cathy at cathy@aimonemartin.com if you are interested in becoming involved.

US Department of Labor to host annual conference for nation’s mine safety, health trainers at National Mine Health and Safety Academy, Oct. 10-12
Training Resources Applied to Mining conference will train the trainers
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor announced today that its Mine Safety and Health Administration is holding its annual Training Resources Applied to Mining conference in Beaver, West Virginia, from Oct. 10 to 12.
The event will bring some of the industry’s leading mine safety and health trainers together to discuss best practices and new approaches for protecting miners at metal, nonmetal and coal mines across the nation.
“Our conference theme in 2023 challenges attendees to ‘Expand Your Reach’ and to strengthen their knowledge of approaches and techniques that can be applied at any mine site to prevent accidents and protect miners from hazards that can jeopardize their safety and health,” explained Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Chris Williamson. “For decades, the Training Resources Applied to Mining conference has helped training professionals improve their skills and infuse their training programs with new ideas and materials. Because MSHA continues to find deficiencies in miner training as root causes of fatal accidents, TRAM remains a valuable resource to help trainers provide quality training to our nation’s miners.”
Held at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy, the conference will include presentations by leading industry trainers and in-person and online workshops on topics ranging from how to better educate miners about designing new techniques in safety and health training. In addition, the conference will feature exhibits and demonstrations by MSHA, state grant recipients and other industry stakeholders.
The conference will also include the results of MSHA’s annual competition of mining-related training materials.
Conference attendance is free, but registration is required.
The National Mine Health and Safety Academy is the world’s largest educational institution devoted solely to safety and health in mining. The academy serves as the central training facility for federal mine inspectors, mine safety professionals from other government agencies, the mining industry and labor.

Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Matthew Sponagle, 30, is a member of a 25-person team from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency searching for the remains of 10 airmen from a B-24H Liberator bomber that crashed in a field in northern Germany in 1945.
Besides helping to identify personal effects and remains of the crew, Sponagle's other important job is explosive ordnance disposal technician for the team.
When the team first arrived on Aug. 1, Sponagle established liaison with the local police and the German explosive ordnance disposal technicians who would dispose of any bombs or ammunition found.
After graduating from boot camp in September 2011 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, Sponagle spent eight months learning his craft at the Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
But going to school doesn't mean you learned everything there is to know, he said. "You learn something new at each site," he said. For instance, Sponagle had to research the World War II ordnance that the bomber carried to better mitigate any hazards in Germany. He learned all about the bombs the aircraft was carrying — including information on the bomb fuses, small arms and ammunition, such as the 50-calibre machine gun.
Sponagle, a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, said this is his fourth recovery mission.
His first recovery mission was on a jungle mountain in Panama, where he helped search for two naval aviators whose plane crashed during a training mission.
The team found some of the airmen's personal effects and parts of the aircraft; however, they found no remains, so that was pretty frustrating, he said.
Sponagle's next recovery mission was searching for missing airmen who crashed in Thailand in World War II.
Sponagle said his third recovery mission was special because they were searching for remains of Marines who fought on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands during World War II.
As for future plans, Sponagle said he plans to stay in the Marine Corps and then work overseas on humanitarian assignments with a nongovernmental organization. Sponagle said he volunteered for the recovery missions because he wanted to give back to the families whose loved ones paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The agency, which is part of the Defense Department, searches in 45 countries for missing service members from World War II and later conflicts, including the Korean War, Vietnam War and Desert Storm. Some 81,000 are still missing.
Once remains are recovered and the agency's laboratory determines the person's identity through DNA analysis and other means, the service member's family is notified and arrangements are made for a military funeral.
