Brazil’s National Mining Agency (ANM) is set to hire 40 more safety inspectors, to more than double the total number of inspectors, allowing it to check all the country’s tailings dams annually, the agency’s director told Reuters on Thursday.

Total construction starts were down 4 percent in January, compared to the previous month, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $794.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. By segment, nonresidential building starts were flat in January, nonbuilding starts retreated 10 percent and residential starts were down 4 percent.

Copper prices jumped to a nine-year high on Thursday as Chinese investors returned from a week-long holiday, adding impetus to a rally that has almost doubled prices since the height of coronavirus worries last March. Copper for delivery in March was up 2.1% to $3.9025 a pound (about $8,603.58 a tonne) by 1 p.m. in New York, after a slight pullback from the previous day’s trading. Earlier in the session, the contract had reached $3.931 ($8,666.42), its highest since September 2011.

On Jan. 16, 2021, a miner was fatally injured while using a tool to remove a down-the-hole hammer. The drill motor turned unexpectedly, pinning the driller’s leg between the tool and the drill mast.

Canadian miner Barrick Gold Corp reported a quarterly profit on Thursday that beat analysts’ estimates, helped by a jump in gold prices due to coronavirus-induced economic uncertainty. The company’s U.S.-listed shares were up 2.4% at $21.33 before the bell.
