On Thursday, June 3, 2021, a 42-year-old section foreman was fatally injured when he was hit by a shuttle car. The victim was struck when he walked into the path of a loaded shuttle car that was traveling to the dump point.

Copper price rose for the second consecutive day on Tuesday following its drop to the lowest since April 14 on Friday despite the announcement of China’s first auction from state metal reserves. Copper for delivery in July rose 1.5% from Monday’s settlement price, touching $4.259 per pound ($9,390 per tonne) midday Tuesday on the Comex market in New York.

Sandvik expects the market for battery-electric underground mining equipment to hit a higher gear in 2-3 years, as mining companies attempt to lower emissions and cut costs. With an electrification boom looming, Sandvik, whose competitors include Epiroc and Caterpillar, could sell more electric than diesel-driven underground mining kit in 10 years, its mining business head said.

On April 8, 2021, the Eastern PA, Mid Atlantic, Penn State Student ISEE and SME chapters came together to host a joint virtual meeting. In attendance were 17 participants including chapter members, students, faculty and a guest speaker.

The U.S. Navy has started a series of tests on its newest and most advanced aircraft carrier by detonating powerful explosions to determine whether the ship is ready for war. The first of the tests, which are known as Full Ship Shock Trials, occurred Friday when the Navy set off a giant explosive event near the USS Gerald R. Ford, according to a statement.
