Submit Your Abstract Now for the 2017 Annual Conference

Did you have a recent breakthrough on a project? Submit your findings for a chance to present your work at the world’s largest conference on explosives engineering.

Abstracts for the 43rd Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique, to be held Jan. 29 – Feb. 1, 2017, at the Caribe Royale Orlando Hotel in Orlando, Fla., are now being accepted by the International Society of Explosives Engineers.

Papers addressing all explosives and blasting-related topics will be considered. Accepted papers will be scheduled for either one of the technical sessions or the Blasters Forum, a multimedia poster event with one-on-one interaction between the author and the audience.

Inside the Billion-Dollar Dig to America’s Biggest Copper Deposit

The entrance to America’s deepest mine shaft sits on a plateau high above the Arizona desert, about an hour east of Phoenix. Tucked against the base of a ridge of steep cliffs, it looks southeast over miles of ragged boulder fields. What looks like a large capital A rises above its entrance. It’s the steel headframe used to hoist equipment in and out of the shaft, a concrete tube 30 feet wide that goes 6,943 feet straight down.

Largest US Mining Firm Peabody Energy Close to Bankruptcy

The largest coal mining firm in the US - Peabody Energy - is considering filing for bankruptcy protection, the company said on Wednesday.

Peabody missed a $71 million (£50 million) debt payment and has invoked its 30-day grace period to avoid defaulting. The company said it had enough funds for now, but "may need to voluntarily seek protection under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code."

Sandvik will merge its operations Sandvik Mining and Sandvik Construction into one business area – Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology operations will be organized in a de-centralized business model with separate product areas based on the product offering. Each product area will have full responsibility and accountability for its respective business.

Mining Slowdown Worsening Job Prospects in Canada

A sustained rout in commodity prices continues to hamper job prospects in the Canadian mining sector, especially in resource-dependent provinces, such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

While the shock has certainly been the largest for oil-producing regions, the knock-on effects from the drop in capital investment in Canada’s oil sands has rippled through to other industries and provinces.
