The windfall from cheap fuel may have met its match. On 21 September 2016, the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) formally proposed a global marketbased aviation industry emissions measuring plan. ICAO picks up where the EU left off and sets the framework to implement global standards to measure, and ultimately reduce, airline CO2 emissions. Bloomberg and the Air Transport Action Group report this new plan could eventually cost the industry $24 billion USD annually.

Not all airlines love cheap fuel. Of course if they had a monopoly on flights, low oil prices would be great. The problem is everyone else. The European aviation market remains fragmented. This is despite the fact that any airline based in a European Union member country can fly anywhere they want. Although there have been high-profile collapses in the past, many countries still have at least one carrier.

The government must ensure that Irish aviation interests are central in any negotiations on how Ireland fares in a post-Brexit EU, according to the head of the Irish Aviation Authority.

GE is focusing efforts on driving additive manufacturing, after a disappointing Q4 2016. This certainly seems to be a smart approach; Dario Mantegazza, an Avio Aero manufacturing engineer, said it best, when he described 3D printing as having "no limits to complexity."
