The seventh annual ISTAT Asia conference is in the books and was a rousing success in terms of record-breaking attendance, informative panel discussions, entertaining and educational keynotes, networking opportunities galore, and scores of informal discussions. Representatives from major airlines, leasing companies, manufacturers and appraisers were on hand to discuss the ever-changing needs and opportunities in the Asian aviation landscape.
The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong served as the host property, which packed a healthy amount of content into three days, including a very special opportunity in the form of opening remarks from the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Honourable C Y Leung, who greeted attendees on the first full day of the conference, 10 May. The Chief Executive outlined measures that the city was implementing to attract more global aircraft leasing activity. He cited pending legislation that would provide incentives to lessors, pointing out Hong Kong’s status as "China’s international finance center."
In addition, the conference featured several keynotes, which included presentations from Adam Pilarski, Ph.D., senior vice president, AVITAS, Inc.; Blake Scholl, chief executive officer and founder, Boom Supersonic; and Dick Forsberg, head of strategy, Avolon.
There were also numerous panel discussions, including: the Lessor CEO, Japanese Investor, Best Location for Lessors, Low-Cost Airline and Mid-Life panels.
New to ISTAT Asia was the Best Location for Lessors Panel, during which panelists discussed the emergence of leasing options in the region and focused on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the tax structure in Asia.
Be sure to look for a more comprehensive recap in the next issue of Jetrader. As always, presentations and photos from are available via the ISTAT mobile app and the ISTAT website, and don’t forget to make plans to attend next year’s event in Singapore, 8-10 May.
